Seriously, what is funny about SNL?
#1Seriously, what is funny about SNL?
Posted: 5/23/09 at 11:59pmEvery so often, I tune-in, and wonder why the hell I bothered. I mean since the 1970s!!! However, it just may be worse than it's ever been. I just watched a wretched skit with some girl character named "Gilly", who never did anything funny. The skit went on and on and on and on, and there wasn't a single thing that would make anyone smile, let alone laugh. Somebody actually collects a paycheck for writing this sh*t?

The Zack Effron Show had one or two highlights. The best shows this season IMHO were the Justin Timberlake, the Dwayne Johnson and the Will Ferrell The beginning of the season had some very great episodes specially the ones Tina Fey appeared on.
Despite a clunker now and then this season was pretty strong.

I stopped watching years ago, when they did very unfunny skit about braided nasal hairs.
There are, however, people who thought that piece was hilarious. They were about 12 year old, though, and would laugh at anything.

Except that Republicans are evil, there is no God, abortions should be mandatory and people who eat meat are going to hell.

I thought the Gilly sketch was not remotely funny, except for the Zac-Efron-wearing-lederhosen part. And honestly, I just don't get the humor of SNL. Most of the sketches don't really seem to have punchlines... they're just an unfunny running gag repeated ad nauseum. Which could be funny if they had really eccentric characters or were outrageously absurd like Monty Python, but they're just... not. There have definitely been sketches that have made me laugh, but it's almost always the acting, not the writing, that's funny.
It's weird, because usually, I'm SO easily amused. Every stupid youtube video or cheesy pun usually cracks me up, and I'm always the one who has to choke back laughter at the movies because I think everything's funny when no one else does. But I just don't get SNL>

It's all subjective, obviously, but Gilly is pretty stupid by anyone's criteria. Kristen Wiig really overextended herself this year, she's great in small doses but really needs to cool it next season.
I'm not going to waste my time typing out a long credo as to why I'm an SNL fan (short answer: I do improv/sketch and would really like to be on the show at some point) since there will always be someone there to refute every point I make, but I'll just say that it's not all crap. Obviously any sketch show is going to be hit-and-miss, but there've been a few pretty strong hits this season.
ETA: Sally, Chevy Chase is getting a new show on NBC this fall. I'd be really excited for it if it didn't mean 30 Rock wasn't being pushed back until November/December.

I too find the absurdity of Gilly amusing.
The problem with most of Kristen Wiig's characters (and writing) is she comes up with wonderfully absurd characters but really doesn't know exactly what to do with them.
