The 'crackpot' part of the tea party IS the GOP. They've co-op'd folks with real concerns about the size of government, and leveraged it as a vehicle for their most extreme hate themes.

Further evidence of the de-mavericking of John McCain: A few years back during the HR4437 debacle, he was one of the few Republican advocates for a path to legalization, and he's generally been a true moderate on the issue of immigration. Now? Like every other ****ing GOP coward, he's backed off in the face of tea party extremism and suddenly decided he hates those gosh-darned migrants after all.
(Another Republican moderate during the last great immigration reform push? Arlen Specter. His decision to switch parties is looking wiser every day.)
