Last night I got to see an absolutely amazing performance, Shen Wei Dance Arts performing a newly reconceived version of Shen Wei's 2005 piece Map, and a new solo by Shen Wei at the Judson Memorial Church. Map was simply stunning. The company is performing this piece in the round (original choreographed for a proscenium). Apparently the original plan was to use the backdrop normally used for this piece as the dance floor, but the size of the drop prevented that. Instead the drawings from the drop were transferred onto large helium balloons that floated above the space. I can not stop thinking about this piece, set to Steve Reich's The Desert Music. Being in such close proximity to the dancers was incredible and allowed an emotional connection we sometimes lose in dance due to the divide of the proscenium.

Sadly there is only one more performance tonight and I believe it is sold out, but if you are interested in modern dance it would be worth it it see if it's still possible to get in.
