The website announces that the initial run of the DVD will be pressed, not burned DVDs.

VERY happy about this!

Directed by James Whale (of "Gods and Monsters" fame).

Starring Irene Dunne, who played Magnolia in the national tour. It was during the tour that she was "discovered" by Hollywood. By the time she made this movie, she was already an established film star.

With Original Broadway cast members Charles Winninger as Cap'n. Andy, Helen Morgan as Julie, and Sammy White as Frank. With Allan Jones (singer Jack Jone's father), Hattie McDaniel, and the incredible Paul Robeson.

It also retained several of the original stagings and orchestrations from the Broadway production, although they did add a few songs and shift some things around.

It's a solid film musical of that era, and a must-have on DVD for me!

It's about damn time.

As I said in the other thread, just too bad the long rumoured remaster (or a BR) never happened...

I thought I read earlier that this Warner Archive release WAS remastered ... but now I don't see it on the website.

Did they remove that? Or am I crazy?

... Don't answer.

I was hoping they would release the 1936 and 1951 Show Boats together on Blu-ray (and maybe even the silent one!), just like they did in a laser disc box set. I can dream, can't I?

I swear it was all but official that that was the plan one time, if various BD forums can be believed. I mean, still, I'll get this, and I'm pleased, but... (It is interesting that the first batch won't be MOD because they "expect it to be a popular title.")

If they think they will sell 1,000 or even 500 copies (or more, of course), it's better to replicate the discs, rather than duplicate them (DVD-R).

Replication is done by creating a glass master, which isn't cheap. Once the glass master is created, the cost per-unit is much cheaper than if you duplicated each disc separately. It's also a far more stable disc, in the end, which is good for the consumer. As long as you create a decent number of discs (maybe 1,000), then the up-front expense of the glass master is worth it. Otherwise, it's not.

Warner Archives has done this before. It's not the first time I've seen them sell replicated discs, which aren't really "on demand." And of course, they have to store them somewhere until they sell off the stock, so that was the reason for this on-demand business model in the first place. They could do small runs or one-offs on movies without having to store product in a big warehouse.
