I watched the marathon Saturday night, the first three episodes aired in order, and I am totally hooked. The cast includes Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin, and Damian Lewis as the main character Brody. The writing, direction and photography are first rate, and the acting matches anything I have ever seen on TV including early WEST WING and early MAD MEN. The story is intriguing, about an American Marine released from captivity after 8 years as a POW of a terrorist group in Afghanistan, and the issue is, has he been turned. None of the characters is a reliable narrator of what is going on, but it is all so subtle that it is impossible to tell when to trust anyone's opinions. Next episode airs tonight at 10 pm ET, on Showtime.
And am I the only person astounded at the number of English/Australian actors currently successfully playing American characters? Hugh Laurie has really started a trend!
This is my favorite new show and it proves why network dramas are slowly dying. The writing, the acting and the overall feeling of the show are so sophisticated and top notch. I didn't think I'd enjoy it because I thought it'd be too gimmicky and kinda simple but I love the fact that just about every character is unreliable and you really do get a sense of suspense. What I like the most is that no matter which way they decide to go with the show (whether Carrie is right, wrong, psychotic or not), it still seems like it's gonna be exciting and interesting one way or the other.
Claire Danes is great as the lead, Damian Lewis is sympathetic and disturbing all at once, I love the way they explore the relationship with his family. Mandy Patinkin is surprisingly understated and has a really complex chemistry with Danes. I really like this show.
I don't have Showtime but finally found the episodes online last night and watched the first episode. It really is a spectacular new show and one of the best things on TV right now. I'm very happy to get to see Claire Danes every week!
