According to a new study released. That equals about 3.6 million British gays.

Polls are always flawed and underreport these sorts of things. All that poll shows is that 6% of the British population is out enough and comfortable enough with their sexuality to tell a poll taker that they are gay. That's all. Even in an anonymous poll, studies have shown that a large percentage of people lie regarding revealing personal information that they are embarassed about. If someone is very closeted (and have never said "I am gay" out loud to themselves, let alone anyone else), do you really think they'll be honest with a poll taker?
So 6% of Britain is openly, unashamedly gay. Great. Add another 10% to account for those who are closeted and lied or are sexually active with the same sex but don't consider themselves "gay" and you'll be closer to the ballpark figure of the actual number of people who are gay in the country.

However, it is helpful because lawmakers in the U.K., who were voting against pro gay legislation, were doing so on the basis that there were too few gays in the U.K. to make passing any laws worth it. If you read the article, one estimated that only 1 in 100 Brits were gay. This newly released study clearly proves them wrong. So the anti-gay lawmakers can no longer use that as an arguement, which was the point of the artilce.

my coworkes actually play "gay or european" on business trips in airports, etc. they pick someone out of the crowd and try to determine if they are, indeed, gay or european then look for clues to determine either (or both).

First off, since I have come to learn that you seem to be the Chief of the Spelling Police around here, I am completely dissapointed in your egregious errors in the sentence above. Second, how dare you take my story? Yes, I am one of the said coworkers, and it is a fun game, dammit! (And frankly, it helps me figure out who to flirt with later in the day!
