Smoking...all I can ask is...why?

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:49pmI don't understand it. At all. And I hate it. It really gets under my skin when I see talented people smoking. I think "seasoning" your voice is a load of bull-sh*t.

Posted: 5/6/05 at 11:56pmJbaraFan, I'm like you. I might have 1 or 2 social cigarettes a year and have no urge to light up otherwise. I'm dating a smoker now, and it doesn't really bother me. Though he's trying to quit for real now, and I'm not looking forward to the crankiness that will ensue.

Posted: 5/7/05 at 12:00amYeah your lungs can heal...the 15-30 years was for heavier smokers. i mean yeah i do crack sometimes, but nothing to what i used to do. Now it has been like once or twice a month and i used to do 1/2 a pack a day.

'yeah i do crack sometimes'
It took me a full minute to realize what you really meant.
How does the healing affect the possiblity of cancer?

I just keep thinking of those gorgeous men who are going to end up smoking themselves into a ditch:
Elijah Wood
James McAvoy
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers
Hayden Christensen
Ewan McGregor
Johnny Depp
Natalie Portman smokes as well, and has for a long time. You sure can't tell by looking at her. Same with Keira Knightley.

insomniak, I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I was like, wow, that's a much worse habit than just smoking...

Yea but smoke from crack doesn't smell, so it doesn't piss anyone else off.
Natasha Richardson smokes too.
Matt Damon quit, but he used to smoke 2 packs a day.
Brad Pitt smokes
Jennifer Aniston smokes
Britney Spears smokes
I think Jude Law smokes too

Johnny Depp smokes.
Personally all I can ask is.......why?........why do people who don't smoke or never have smoked or are under the age of 17 think they can pass judegment on my habit? Why?

I quit smoking a little over two weeks ago....it's hard but I haven't cracked yet. I haven't been to any clubs because I know if I have a drink and am surrounded by smokers I will be tempted to smoke. I'm giving myself a little more time before I head out to a club.

Carl Magnum, that's what I was thinking when I first posted, but I changed it because I figured people would get offended.
It's a person's own business if they smoke, not yours. The whole ANTI-SMOKING movement (like those god-awful The Truth ads on TV) is really pissing me off. I never had the supposed billions of dollars of advertising trying to get me to smoke, but I've had those "The Truth" ads shoved down my throat for years. Hell, I've even said that if I could smoke, I would start just to spite them.
There are many different habits. Seeing people pick their nose makes me physically ill, but if I told someone to stop that, they would freak and say that it's their right to do so. Even though it makes me sick. So why is it okay for people to be so judgmental about smoking, but not about other bad habits?

It's only justified when said habit does affect others.
I don't care if people smoke. But, I do care if they are rude about it. And there should be regulations as to where one can smoke. There are for drinking alcohol and even for eating.
And, for the record, you can smoke in my bed ANYTIME, Carl!!

One of the reasons I stopped smoking was because my Primary Care Physician had been after me to stop for awhile. So have my parents. In January I got my yearly physical. My chest x-rays came back fine. My doctor said that for someone who has been smoking as long as I have (I started when I was 17, and I'm now 35) my chest x-rays were unremarkable and if I wanted to stop that now was the time.
When I worked out I found myself short of breath very quickly, almost "winded". My smoking increased and decreased depending on the events of the day. Some times I would feel chest tightening. Sometimes a productive cough.
Then a couple of things woke me up:
Seeing a man with a talking apparatus inserted where his wind pipe once was because he lost it to throat cancer.
Then:
A close friend of mine (who's 50) has just been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. A direct cause of this was his pack and a half a day smoking habit. He went into cardiac arrest on Sunday and now only 15% of his heart is functioning on some normal level. He's scheduled for open heart surgery. Open heart surgery at the age of 50!
Those were just some of the factors that led me to finally decide to kick the habit. My parents smoked for 20 years and 15 years ago they both quit cold turkey and are so much better for it.
I just quit, I'm planning on sticking to it come hell or high water. I'm in no way condemning anybody's choice to continue smoking. That's a very personal decision one must make for themeselves. The evidence is out there that smoking is not good for your health. What you do with that information is entirely up to you.

"Smoking...all I can ask is...why?"
Because those of us who smoke are misanthropic narcissistic pigs who sincerely hope that the cloud of poison we create around ourselves is so repulsive that all the normal perfect people (like yourself) stay far away and leave us the hell alone.

As an ex-smoker who puffed away on two packs a day from the age of 17 for over 20 years, I notice no-one has actually answered the "Why?"
Because...
It is HIGHLY ENJOYABLE! Even knowing the hideous consequences, I still relished every cigarette right up to the day I quit. People don't smoke to piss people off or to make themselves sick. They smoke because it feels great. Of course, after a while it gets harder to smoke in between coughing and gasping for breath, but even though I feel a million times better for having stopped, I still look back on those sneaky little chest pains with a rose-coloured nostalgia.

wildcat, you make me wanna start...
I actually hate those The Truth ads too, and can't even imagine that they do any good.
re: Smoking...all I can ask is...why?#47
Posted: 5/7/05 at 10:30amThose "Truth" ads are p*uckin garbage. Why is it that when the study came out that found second hand smoke not as deadly, as these truth ads make it out to be, were these jokers not made to retract? So Tabacco isn't the only one lying huh?...............These commercials are about as effective and just as irritating as the anti marajuana commercials.

Posted: 5/7/05 at 10:51amI don't get it either. To me it's disgusting. And in school there is like 3 programs we get to get us off drugs. I started those programs in like 1st grade. Although they dont always work I know 12 year olds that drink and smoke. Unfortunately the ones who smoke tell me its a faster way to die. I hate that i feel so bad for her. Also i personally think its disgusting, the smell is awful. Why is my question too.

Not that it excuses or justifies anything, but a couple of words you might keep in mind while you are judgementally fuming are 'nicotene' and 'addiction'.
Fuming . . . fumar . . . pardon me while I take a break.
