Why on earth do people do it?? My mom (who won't admit that she smokes a lot) claims that smoking is a "very social thing"...whatever that means. It's a slow suicide...why?

i remember asking that of a classmate back in high school. her reply, "i don't want to live forever."

which is fine, if smoking just killed you quickly, in one instant but how about hanging on for years and years with one form of cancer, emphysema or another ailment?!? i don't get it. plus, it's soooooooooooooooooooo expensive!

I don't know how one can say it's social - most people I know won't go near someone while they're smoking. They smell horrid and the smoke gets on you and makes you smell badly, too. (then there's the whole issue about second hand smoke harm)

But when I was in high school, it DID look cool and "grown up". I guess if you started at a young age with that motivation, it would be easy to get addicted in no time - cancer or no cancer.

I'm a very open-minded person, but when people smoke it annoys the F*CK out of me! Not ony are you killing yourself, you're killing those around you. I realize that most smokers want to quit. I wish them success.

Screw the tobacco industry...that's all I can say...other than why. Who the hell would come up with an idea like smoking? Did they not know it was bad at the time?

Social smoking means you wouldn't buy cigarettes yourself and sit at home smoking, but you don't have an issue with smoking at parties or something.

I don't smoke, but I don't have issues if someone does. People always do things that are unhealthy for them, why does smoking get the bad rep, but stuff like over-eating doesn't?

My ex is a smoker. She began at the age of 23! Her excuse is that she was living in Hungary at the time and there was "nothing else to do." So now, 40 years later, she's still smoking and can't quit. Idiot.

Kurt Vonnegut, a lifelong smoker, once wrote: "The public health authorities never mention the main reason many Americans have for smoking heavily, which is that smoking is a fairly sure, fairly honorable form of suicide." He also coined the memorable term for cigarettes "cancer sticks."

Because, skittles, my overeating hurts only me. Someone else's smoke gets into my lungs. And hair, clothes, etc.

I think that back in the fifties, sixties, and seventies smoking was a very social thing (in different ways in each decade).

There was a great ad on a few years ago where a woman was standing outside by herself, having a cigarette. A guy comes out and asks to join her, and she says that the funny thing was that she started smoking in order to fit in, and now it made her left out.

I have so many friends from college who are smokers, yet I never felt tempted. I did a show where I had to smoke on stage, and I did get a "buzz" from it, but everyone that I know who is a smoker, says that they don't get that anymore, so then, really, what would be the point if it doesn't even make you feel anything!

I know some people get addicted by just a couple for a part, or what have you.

Me? I tried 'em and that was done.

I'm with Rath...overeating only hurts me.

Fat people get it all the time. The biggest concerns right now are because of overweight people. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death, isn't it? Or did obesity take over?

My mom was not talking about that. That's social smoking-not smoking being social. She smokes by herself all the time. My brother chews tobacco. Might I now ask-WTF? Chewing tobacco? Is life REALLY that bad?

Yeah, smoking on stage was how a lot of my friends became "social smokers" which soon led to "stress smokers" which finally ended up as smokers. I actually have a big issue with the use of smoking on stage, film, or tv. I don't mind it when there's a reason, or it's making a point, but when it's just used to fill time, or "just because".

To quote the Play Nickel and Dimed:

"What anti-smoking crusaders don't understand is that smoking is an act of self-nurturance, carried out in definace. Work is waht you do for others, smoking's what you do for yourself. At work in America, the only thing alot of people can call their own is the tumors they're nourishing and they time they steal to feed them."

Wanna hear something funny? Smoking tobacco was originally legalized way back when because it was considered healthy. No joke.

The smell makes me sick. Smokers aren't automatically evil, but I don't find it or its side effects attractive at all.

Worse thing in the world is to come home with smoky clothes - sorry to all the smokers out there, but I have to agree with the original sentiments of this post - why?

"Who the hell would come up with an idea like smoking? Did they not know it was bad at the time?"

People thousands of years ago, at all points around the globe. No, they didn't know smoking was bad for you, they were too busy with issues like the Ice Age.

Sorry Rathnait, I was thinking more about the personal health risks involved in smoking, not the impact on others.

I started smoking when i was 13. It is the stupidest thing in the world...I smoked for two years after that, and me new years resolution this year was to quit. I have successfully quit, but not before long hard hours of self control. It is stupid and many people realize that, but it is too hard. It is all a mind thing. If you are doing something constantly with non smokers it is easy to quit. The reason it was so hard for me is because all of my friends smoke. In fact i don't hang out with people that don't smoke. But as long as you have self control and good friends that won't let you even though they are you can do it!
This is just advice for people trying to quit. If you are a smoker and trying to quit tell your friends not to let you. Don't buy them, and constantly do things that you don't usually do. Don't allow yourself the free time to smoke, and try not to think about it. like i said it is only a mind thing, so if you don't think about it you are halfway there.
I took Health last semmester and i got a sheet that showed the immidiate and long term effects of quitting. This sheet said that if you stop smoking your body starts to heal itself in 2 days. You will notice the changes, and you will be able to have more energy, and in 15-30 years your lungs will be back to normal.

I myself am allergic to cigarette smoke. It really causes a problem when I am around smokers, and me saying, "I can't stand here and talk to you when you smoke," even though enough cigarette smoke will make me quite ill, always manages to offend, even when I am trying my hardest to be beyond polite. I don't criticize, I just say that I can't be around it. But what I hate is that people get so rude about it... I mean, people who are allergic to dogs don't apologize when they say, "I can't be around your dog, I'm allergic," and people don't get offended by that... I just don't get it. Grrrrr.

Thankfully, my town is smoke-free... all businesses and eateries are non-smoking.

Why? nicotine addiction - this ain't your great grandpa's tobacco anymore. Chemists have seen to that. Nothing like a captive market.

CostumeMistress, I'm allergic to smoke too (as well as asthmatic with a lung sensitivity), but I've never had a problem with people being rude to me. In public places, I feel like it's not really my place to tell them to stop if I can do something avoid it, like moving away from them. If it's someone I'm talking to, I mention ahead of time that I'm allergic to smoke, so if I need to leave, I will.

It's rude smokers that bother me--people who light up BEFORE stepping outside OR stand in the doorway while they smoke OR blow their last puff out AFTER they have entered.

Are most office bldgs smoke-free now? Where my husband works, anyone taking a smoking break has two options of where to go smoke: there's a picnic table area they can go to, or they can go to their car and smoke. Used to they could just smoke outside the building, now these specific spots only.

Since I was a teen, I've been one of those weirdo people who will smoke once in a blue moon but have never gotten in the habit. I can't even tell you the last time I bought or bummed a cigarette. I'd guess a couple years, maybe more. Hard to believe maybe, but that's the truth.
