Posted: 4/28/08 at 10:18pmWow you guys rock for doing that so young. At 19, I still thought for sure that I would snap out of it and still end up marrying a girl by age 25. I have several openly gay students and I look at them and how relaxed and open they are.......wow I could have never done that.

The world has changed. I was 14 when I came out...every teacher and priest told me not too.
Nowadays, kids don't really care too much.
My folks still won't acknowledge it to their friends...so they won't be judged. Even if they know their friends have a gay son.
And I'm in my 40's.

I love you Taz...
I couldn't go to the prom.
Because they saw me at Rocky Horror the week before...

Posted: 4/28/08 at 10:32pmBE2--I'll congratulate you for coming out as long as you promise not to get bitchy--there's ample evidence around you of the dangers of that.

Posted: 4/28/08 at 10:32pmI came out to my immediate family and friends last November, when I was 15.

TomMonster... I have to disagree with you when you say "Nowadays, kids don't really care too much."
They care an awful lot. People at my school get judged for being in the "Gay Straight Alliance" to a huge extent. You'll hear everyone say "That's gay" as a synonym for "That's stupid." People mock gays and speak in that "gay accent." The list goes on and on.
Believe me, it was hard enough to tell my best friend.

It's always hard b/c we're constantly told it's wrong. We have to gain the self confidence first before we can even imagine coming out.
It's a brave and courageous step for most homossexuals I imagine.

I'm thankful I live in NYC...I forget sometimes what the rest of the country really feels. Until I travel. *sigh*

Just be yourself.
It's the easy, and if you are comfortable withyourself, others will be as well.
I was born gay, so I've been out my whole life.
Hell, the kids in high school were calling me 'fag' before I even had sex, so everyone knew.

the great increase of gay images in pop culture and our society plus the Internet has made it easier to realize you are gay and therefore people are coming out at younger ages. But coming out to others is still very hard.
And while people know about gays more than ever, that can be good or bad depending on the person's actual knowledge of gays. before, people didnt really think about it and now its on their mind in many ways.
Things are getting better even in spite of having a President and political party who fanned the flames.

No doubt they're getting better. By leaps and bounds. We're more accepted than ever before and it seems like everyone knows a gay person, which has helped people realize that we're not lecheurous satyrs and baby killers.
Still, it doesn't diminish the pressure of coming out in HS.
It's a brave thing.

Oh, I'm comfortable with myself. I can't say that everyone around me is comfortable with me. This is me:
My History teacher: Ok, Tucker, your turn to present.
Me ala Dreamgirls: And I'm telling you... I'm not going-
History teacher: *fake smile* Tucker... go.
My favorite moment was in French class:
Madame to me: Are you SINGING while I'm TRYING to talk!?
I think being comfortable with myself means I can do those things and still laugh about them after.
By the way, I'm 14.

Posted: 4/28/08 at 10:50pmI started coming out to people when i was 16 (going to a catholic high school the people were limited to those i knew weren't zombies). Then when i got to college it was much easier (being a drama major at a school on long Island the environment was much more accepting) and i was out to everyone (well i thought i was, up to my junior year there were a few people who still thought i was straight) except family. Now it's pretty much just my extended family (Some of them are conservative rednecks) and my father.

Posted: 4/28/08 at 10:53pm"Coming out" isn't really something that happens all at once--it's a constant process. The more you do it, the easier it gets (to a degree.)
