So frustrated! Your opinion please...

I just got back from going out with a bunch of friends from the theatre group. We went to Bennigan's and sat at the bar. I don't drink. Never have. Never Will.

On the other hand, people got beers like you wouldn't beleive. My friend knows the bartender and he gave everyone free beers and shots all which probably added up to over 90$.

All I got was french fries and water.

My bill came to 2.43 (expensive fries, I know)

I gave 5.00$ as a tip and people were absolutely freaking out at me how I should of gave more and how he (the bartendar) was so nice. And yes, it was very kind of him to give everyone free drinks. And I wouldn't have normally given that much of a tip but since I was with a group of people and he was very kind, I gave him it.

Other people's bills were more like 9 or 10$ and they gave him 20$ tip! Which, of course, is probably still less than it would have been with all their drinks.

Was it right for them to attack me for only giving him as much as I did- especially since I didn't drink at all?

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

Tip is 15-20% of the total bill. $20 was a nice tip for a $90 tab. Could have been more though since they drank for free. You should have no regrets. You were very fair.

They are idiots.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

Thank you vbplayer! At least I know I'm not going crazy.

I gave 100% tip being that I gave 5.00$ for a 2.43$ bill. Just because he was kind and gave THEM free drinks, doesn't mean I should give him more than 100% tip.

were they drunk when berating you for this? that could factor into their idiocy.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

lol exotic- They probably were, although, they normally drink so much that they could never get drunk. Each person had 2 shots and about 5 beers. And there were 8 people there.

Knowing them, drunk or not, they would have done the same thing and had a pissy fit.

I just messaged one of my friends about it (the one who knows the bartendar) and hopefully she'll read it when she is calmer. She worked herself up screaming at me. She wouldn't let me even answer to her questions...at that point, I just walked out.

Emcee-

The most alcohol I've ever drank in my 21 years is, a few sip of Manshevitz wine.

No no no. I don't mean that not drinking is unjustified; I don't drink, either. I mean that if you didn't drink, your friends' expectation for you to tip more is unjustified.

I do drink, and your tip was very generous. Your friends are out of line. Don't feel that you need to justify your actions. You were completely in the right and your "friends" are still idiots.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

Thanks guys! The only reason I felt bad not doing it was because I love these people and I don't want them to be mad at me for this.

It's such a stupid thing and I don't want to lose friendships over it.

I know in my heart that what I did was good (extra good) and I shouldn't worry about what they think.
It's just hard because I feel they are going to 'dump' me because they think I am cheap.

They said that I should give more because I sat at the bar and that I was there for a while. That is true but there were a ton of other seats left at the bar; Plus, I did leave a huge tip.

If they're going to stop being friends with you over THIS, then... well, why would you want to be friends with them? That's ridiculous.

They'll probably get over it. Don't worry.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

This is what I wrote to my friend.

Diane-
Fine- I'm Jewish- I'm cheap- say whatever you want but you guys seriously made me really upset.

I know I made you guys upset but what I did was right for me!

I didn't drink. I had water and fries which came to 2.43. I gave a tip- a lot more than the normal amount
I'm not going to give him EVEN MORE money for any reason. Just because he gave everyone free beer and shots- doesn't mean MY tip should include what you got for free.

I'm sorry if that made you mad. I did what was right for me and gave a lot more than what tips normally are.

There were other seats at the bar in which other people could have sat at if they so chose. I was not taking up any space in which he could have made more money.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

Well, you weren't even being cheap! I don't really get the reasoning that figures into them thinking you should've given more, basically on their behalf. But I hope she responds calmly and rationally, because she's being really unfair.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

Thank you Emcee. I got home really pissy and frustrated. I'm getting my family from the airport tomorrow (err...today) and graduating on Friday from community college.
This is the LAST thing I need to worry about.

Thanks again Emcee and vbplayer re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

"Diane- Fine- I'm Jewish- I'm cheap- say whatever you want"

Am I reading this correctly - she called you cheap because you're Jewish?

If you call these people friends, I'd hate to see who you consider your enemies.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

um, if you gave him a $5 tip for a $2.50 bill, it's a 200% tip......and he should be happy with that.

I make it clear with my fiends when we go out drinking and eating that I will pay my part of the billl (and tip) ONLY.......I do not work hard to subsidize their drinking habits.....Too many people go out, order dinner and 3 drinks at $5 a pop and expect everyone to split the bill.........as neither of us drink, we won't.

I don't pay for their cigarettes or drugs, I sure as Hell am not paying for their booze.......Im know this is off topic but it pisses me off

DG- The "cheap because I'm Jewish" was always a joke- before this.

I guess this is the 1 time that it tipped the bucket. She just went over the top...it was funny before- not any more.

Thanks Elphaba- seriously, I really appreciate you guys saying this and responding. I was just making myself nuts over it.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

Q - honestly, I have some very close Jewish friends - and it does get joked about. One of the great things about them is their sense of fun and self-awareness. BUT, the thought that it could actually be taken seriously - much less thrown out in a moment of anger - would never, ever occur. I'm glad there is a difference for you - and I would seriously talk to her about it, whatever the outcome.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

I'm always in that situation. I don't drink and when I go out for dinner with a group, we divide the check equally and I pay for everyone else's drinks. I'm not sure if it's fair but I feel petty in chiming in that we should redo the math to accommodate my not drinking.

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

petty? Please........do you pay for their cigarettes when you are out with them?

sorry........petty has nothing to do with it. It has to do with fairness. And it is not fair to expect someone who does not drink to pay for drinks for people that do.........your "petty" with a group of 10 friends can add, say three drinks each is another $14.50 per person....and I will not pay it, nor should I have to.

Spliting a meal bill when drinks aren't involved is not a problem, but again I do not work hard to pay for someone elses liquor....

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

I hear you, Elph. Part of it is justified because there are always those who order much more expensive dishes than others, yet everyone chips in equally. If there is champagne involved, or a very large liquor bill, my friends recognize this and I don't pay. I'm ok with it if it's only a couple of drinks, or a carafe of wine that are involved.

different strokes I guess Jane....at least we know if we ever do lunch we don't have to pay for booze! lol

re: So frustrated! Your opinion please...

The thing is- the bartendar didn't charge for ANY drinks. How much are 5 beers and 2 shots each for 8 people? A lot of money- a lot of money he could have made. And damn well he should. And he did- with tips.

Tips that should have come from other people- not me who already had paid 200% of my bill. Not me who didn't have a drink of anything but water.

I'm kinda wondering that if I didn't get fries- what would have happened. Would the whole thing not have happened? Of course, that shouldn't (and didn't) stop me from getting the fries but just for the curiousity factor- I wonder if it wouldn't have happened.
