Could someone explain what provokes each character to sing these songs...?

Come to Your Senses- from Tick Tick Boom
&
Fine Fine Line- from Avenue Q

Also, If someone can give me pointers on the 2nd song...here's a video of me singing through it.

Fine Fine line is sung by kate after princeton tells her he wants to stop seeing her so he can focus on finding his purpose.

And dont quote me on this one but i think come to your senses is part of a show within a show :S
