Starting our poetry unit, everyone in my english class needs to pick out a song which we will later analyze the poetic-ness of or something like that...Anyway the point is I need a song. It doesn't have to be broadway but it does have to be something that is poetic, appropriate, and non-embarrassing (we will have to play it in front of the class). So once again, it doesn't have to be broadway, but it can be. Sorry if this is a little of topic on a broadway forum, but I would really appreciate some help. Thanks!
I would pick Sondheim cause he's the master of intricate, meaningful rhyme, double meaning, and allusion . His lyrics and references are fun to decipher, just like you'd decipher a poem. He's not as vaguely "poetic" as some other writers, but he packs a lot of meaning into a little bit of space, one of the hallmarks of good poetry.
I highly recommend "Marry Me a Little" from Company
Take a look at Another Hundred people from Company
