Opinions on "I Want to Go To Hollywood" anyone?

Yeah. "Vanilla Ice Cream" IS overdone. At every college audition I've had there has been at least two other people doing (that I know of..). Oh, well I'm still doing it. I don't care...haha
A non-theatre friend of my remarked to me yesterday that he's heard a bunch of his theatre friends, including me, use the phrase, "I love that song, but I just can't sing it for an audition because like EVERYONE ELSE is using it" several times in the past week.
I started laughing maniacally. It's too true.

you should definattly stay away from anything from Wicked, songs for a new world, little women, just any that is contemporary and that just came out. Do songs from shows that many people don't know of or the judges don't hear often like Closer than Ever and that sort of stuff.
I agree with some of the things your'e all saying but come on, we have to be able to sing something! And anyway, you know that most auditioners are going to have seen most songs so whatever we think may be unusual, to them might be something they have heard 50 times in the last month!
My suggestion is just sing anything that suits your voice and if you can act then choose something that shows it off and if you find acting whilst you sing difficult then sing something that will show off your technique!
If you know you sing a song well then go for it regardless of whether it has been overdone because if you can knock their socks off with your voice and performance alone, who is going to care what the song is??!!!!

I agree! I know a girl that did Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again at a college audition and blew away the auditioners. She got in and got a scholarship.
I mean I would never do that song or many mentioned in here...but it isn't impossible to get in if you do it.

try singing "The Girl I Mean To Be" or "My Unknown Someone" or "Christmas Lullaby" or "The Kid Inside"
I'm auditioning for StrawHat and they just sent me a list the other day of songs not to sing and i thought it was WAY over the top. they pretty much cut any song that is some what close to a decent audition song. here's some of whats on the list "home" from beauty and the beast and phantom, "gimmie gimmie", "waithing for life to begin", That'll show him", "Meadowlark", "Show me" ,"mamma says" ,"easy money", Gorgeous", "anthem" Adelaide's lament", Anyone can whistle", Being alive" ,"big spender" "Ice cream", "she loves me" "luck be a lady" "goodbye old girl""johanna""whatever he ain't""not while im around""hit me with a hot note""you can always count on me""i met a girl""tonight at 8""my new philosophy""stranger to the rain" "shy" "nobody does it like me and "the story goes on". also they said nothing from any predictable show like Annie, Baby, Company, Secret Garden, the moive Fame, Follies, Godspell, Les Miserables, Little Shop, Phantom of the Opera and any disney film since 1986 and anything from The Fantastics.
when i saw all of that(and there was even more)i was so depressed.i am now having to pick a new song, and my audition is on march 23rd. i really think they go over the board on the "overdone" songs. they hardly leave you with anything good to sing that is still in your age range. i hope this will help some people for the future.
what about Why God Why from Miss Saigon? Too overdone?
its a beautiful song, if you do it well go for it

I know this is titled "songs to avoid," but I thought I might offer a suggestion for songs not to avoid, and that is anything from Ragtime. There are some great songs to do in it.
