Interesting press conference last night.

So, humanitarian aid is being dropped by planes to the thousands fleeing -- GREAT!

So, "targeted" missiles to be deployed vs, the terrorists - Not so great? (Not sure yet)

PJ, would you like to start the discussion Sooo..no threads re Obama/bombing/dropping Aid to Iraq, etc, eh?

All I know is, I'm trapped somewhere unable to get away from CNN. The jingoistic saber-rattling is absolutely no different than it was for George HW's gulf war, or his special son's disastrous sequel. It's uncritical, it's naive and it's the same exact propaganda as before.

I meant Ira Q, Kevvy. And Yes, namo, ALL the mainstream media sucks baaaad. I try and stay away from tv, and try to read internet and newspaper stuff from well sourced real "journalists", which is very difficult to ascertain these days.

WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES

So what do you propose we do, Namo. I personally feel that any foreign intervention in the Near or Middle East is cursed by the gods of every religion that as ever born there and doomed to some sort of failure.

But what do you propose we do in the face of ISIS's actions? These are their shots, by the way. They promulgate them throughout Iraq and Syria to frighten the people they are about to attack: people of different religions, like the Yazidis and Iraqi Christians, and fellow Muslims they determine to be the wrong kind of Muslim.

They have taken several hundred Yazidi women captive, beaten them, converted them forcibly to their brand of Islam, mutilated their genitals, multiple raped them and "married" them to ISIS warriors.

Are you objecting to Obama's intervention, or just to CNN's infantile tone of voice.

PBS' Frontline offered a pretty in depth history of how we got to this point on their most recent episode called "Losing Iraq". It chronicles how the blundering miscalculations of the Bush administration, the neglect of the Obama administration and some seriously grave errors of the current Iraqi leadership led to this crisis.

I certainly understand war fatigue and frustration with more involvement in Iraq, but if some limited, low-risk action can do some immediate (if short-term) good for the humanitarian crisis, it seems like thing to do. But I doubt a protracted military campaign in Iraq is on the table or even, despite what McCain and his war-hungry hawks say, a remotely good option.

At the end of the day, this is quickly devolving into a an all out civil war and there won't be a military solution that doesn't involve mass slaughter on a much greater scale than what we've seen thus far. Only a political solution in which power is shared and minority groups are protected will work in the long-term. Clearly, al-Maliki is not the man to make that happen.

Many of the fathers and husbands of the women commit suicide after being forced at gunpoint to watch their wives and daughters get raped.

ISIL is arguably the most reprehensible and scariest movement we have seen in decades. Stopping them long term should likely be the top priority for the world, the region and the U.S.. One would hope that among those most desperate to stopping ISIL would be Iran.

Thanks,"I think" for the link PJ. This is one situation where there will be little or no disagreement that the entire world needs to be involved. These are the worst people to come along in my lifetime.

The only question will be how and who should be involved. ISIS is an enemy in the same way that Ebola is an enemy. You can't have a little left over.

The Yazidis are not Christian. The are monotheistic, but their religion is has nothing to do with the Bible. It has similarities to Zoroastrianism.

What ISIS is doing to the Yazidi is what Hamas would like to do to the Jews.

Michael Corleone + Ebenezer Scrooge = Obama

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

I referred to "Christians" as that is what your link (from a Catholic website) called them over a dozen times, including the 40-pt headline.

Yes, they are determined to eradicate Yazidi, Christians, Shia Muslims and even fellow Sunni Muslims whose beliefs veer from ISIS's precise faith.

Its message about Jews was very explicit:

“The Real Zionist Holocaust is Predicted in the Hadiths! The Hour [resurrection] will not take place until the Muslims fight the Jews and the Muslims kill them, and the tree will say: “Oh, Muslim, servant of God, there is a Jew behind me, kill him! THE PROMISED Holocaust

That line is from the Koran, and it is also part of the Hamas Charter.

Most of you probably follow the wonderful "Humans of New York" on Facebook, but in case you don't, he's currently on a world tour sponsored by the UN. He'll apparently be visiting dozens of countries over the next several weeks taking pictures and telling the stories of ordinary citizens across the globe. He's currently in Iraq and sharing some rather striking images and stories from Iraqis - including those from the Yazidi community.

Could someone please provide me with an example of an instance in the past 50 years in which US military intervention in the affairs of a foreign, sovereign nation proved beneficial, in the long run, to our interests or the interests of the citizens of that nation?

By "our interests" I do not mean the financial interests of Haliburton, Navistar, ATK, Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Lockheed Martin and the other merchants of war.

I looked at a few of those horrendous photos before I started to feel nauseous. How can someone be born as a human being and be able to do the things they are doing?

What has to happen to someone to make them able to do those things. And seem to be enjoying it too. This is beyond my ken.

NATO's intervention in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1995 and in Yugoslavia in 1999?

And where's Obama? Off playing golf on Martha's Vineyard. He couldn't care less what is happening in the world.

Oh shut about the golf. They ALL played golf, especially both Bushes.

ISIS stoned two women to death after accusing her of "adultery.". The townspeople refused to participate, so the ISIS "warriors" (who were probably the ones who had raped her) picked up the large stones and began hurling them at her head. No blood waas seen because it was late at night and she was dressed in black.

She died silently.

Not as much as the Part-Time President currently in the White House.
