I am in a Spanish translation class, and we have a pretty open-ended final project. I was thinking about finding a musical in Spanish and translating the songs into English. Does anyone know of any good or prominent Spanish-language musicals that I could find fairly easily? Thanks in advance!

Take a look at this - it's a sort of Spanish juke box musical based on songs by the 80's pop group Mecano.

I was also thinking of Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar. I saw the show in Madrid, but considering it is a jukebox musical, it'll be hard to translate the songs into some semblance of a story unless you get your hands on the scrip or synopsis and translate that as well. There is also the recent Spanish musical film, El Otro Lado de la Cama (aka The Other Side of the Bed), which was pretty popular in Spain. You can find it on Netflix.

What about getting the Spanish translation of a popular American musical and highlighting the subtle differences from one text to another? I always thought the Spanish recording of My Fair Lady was intriguing since the script is so deeply rooted in the English language and its pronunciation.

Yes! WHat Mr Matt Said! The Spanish version of My Fair Lady would be pretty interesting to do. I mean what Spanish dialect does Eliza have?

Well, I think he is supposed to translate the songs into English, and musicals like My Fair Lady are already in English, so that shouldn't work for him. That's why I recommended a musical that is only in Spanish.

"Lovy"
This was a truly original Spanish musical from the beginning of the 80's. It wasn't very successful I think because they tried to cram too many styles into an over enthusiastic production. Worth a listen though.

Well, there is also the newest Spanish musical, "A". It was written by Nacho Cano, composer of Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar and member of Mecano.
