BREAKING NEWS! Mike Fleming and I have just confirmed that Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after franchise director Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, Mike Fleming is told, the studio will focus on a Summer 2012 reboot from a script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast. All this took place today at meeting on the lot today. An official Sony Pictures news release about it is expected out now (see below).

I assume the reboot will try and hold together a possible film for The Avengers, a project that Maguire never wanted to do.

Boy, this is not Spider-man's year.
Now I just think Batman really needs a reboot. I mean, "The Dark Knight" was like, what, 2008? That's like a year ago. Get with the times, suits.
what's the point of doing a reboot. It was perfect the first time around. Continue the damn story
It was just a couple of days ago that John Malkovich was confirmed as Vulture for the fourth film. I think Sony Pictures felt that Raimi and Maguire were attached at the hip so they decided to start over again. I really see no problem with just continuing the story without Sam and Tobey.

I'm sad we won't see happens to Peter and Mary Jane. All we know is that their relationship began to ammend, but we have no closure to it.

Oh no, we need to hear the origin story again. The new group needs to "make it their own," which is the highest of BWW praise. They can get to continuing the story in Spiderman: Reboot: The Sequel.

And yet there are hundreds of comics where you can read to see what happens...

Can you summarize them, I'm not a big reader. Okay, go.

Perfect. Now, when Spiderman does the MaryJane, does he lay spiderbabyeggs?
Broadway Legend Joined: 8/12/09
He not lay them in her
he deposit them in sack and she carry sack around
when babies hatch they bust through sack and eat the MaryJane

Then they need the guy who did Requiem for a Dream to direct.
If it doesn't have Bruce Campbell and JK Simmons, I'm not interested. They have consistently been the best things about the Spiderman movies so far, and if you take them away and leave me with Captain Whinypants, I'm just not going to care. Although I suppose this is as good an opportunity as any to get a Mary-Jane who's actually, y'know, appealing.

"Dammit! And Yoko had just signed on to do the score!"
So THAT is what you consider to be a good score?
or a Mary Jane that is actually....well...Mary Jane. Dunst's character was a mixture of Mary Jane and Gwen Stacey. The Mary Jane in the comics is FIESTY! That is one reason (among many) that #3 didn't work, because you have a Gwen Stacey knock off and the actual Gwen Stacey. Blah!

I LOVED JK Simmons, although I think I forgot to see the 3rd one because it was clear by #2 the returns were diminishing.
#3 is actually the highest grossing of the three films

Hopefully this puts Sam back on track for his Evil Dead sequal/remake.

I didn't mean cash returns, I meant audience pleasure returns.
