I usually avoid large urban areas during a holiday but it is looking like some of my vacation time may be during 3rd wk March 2011. I know about the parade and the traffic tie ups( not to mention the green puke). How bad does it really get? I'd be staying at my usual hotel on w 49th btween 7th & 6th. Thx

I barely notice it.

Just stay away from 5th Avenue, Grand Central and Penn Stations and the Port Authority and assorted Irish themed bars on the 17th and you should be fine.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

I've been in Mid-Town the past two years for St. Patty's day and it's like a giant frat party. Obnoxious high school and college folks running around dressed like leprechauns and drinking to the point of a alcohol poisoning. It's the only time in my life I've been called a fag.

If I didn't have to come into Manhattan for work, I wouldn't.

Was in the city with my Mom and Godmother this past St.Patrick's Day to see South Pacific. Avoid 5TH Ave, Grand Central and Madison Ave in Midtown and you will be alright. Since you are on the Westside, enjoy the emptiness over there while the revelers are partying it up along the parade route. You will run into a few more very drunk and noisy people then usual but not that bad if you stay far West.
Look for me, I will be wearing a green hat! JK.

I realized after I posted that to be between 6th& 7th I have to be east side ( tho really more mid town). Still, sounds like I might be just far enough away to be out of the direct line of the wearing/puking of the green. Thks guys!

I lived on East 55th last year for school, and half my dorm was out drinking by 11am.

I went to see Hair and spent much of the day trying to avoid any and all contact with drunk people.

Avoid all the places that people have suggested, because they are not pretty sights to see.

Keep looking down, there's puke everywhere.

And smell a cab before you get in.

Has any body heard of the Envoy Club Apt Hotel 377 E 33rd St?
It seems a lot more off the beaten track than the Radio City apts I usually go to. Better or worse to avoid the sharing to the green? Or maybe make it my all day shopping trip to Woodbury Commons?
