Okay, so I have been on a bit of a Paul Verhoven kick ever since seeing the magnificent BLACK BOOK and, after ten years, I finally got around to seeing this.
People seem to either love it or hate it. I see it as a hilarious piece of backhanded pro-fascism propaganda. Verhoven says in his commentary that he was hugely influenced by the American war films and propaganda trailers of WWII. Even the corny dialogue and horrible acting (Caspar Van Dien seems to have been cast solely upon the squareness of his head)
seem to work. Loved it. Keep an eye out for a shades-donning Rue McClanahan of all people! Oh, and it features Doogie Houser in Nazi drag. Brilliant.
I also caught FLESH AND BLOOD, another blood-soaked Verhoven amorality fest, and liked it, too though not as much as STARSHIP TROOPERS. Rutger Hauer has never been hotter and Jennifer Jason Leigh may be the most beautiful naked woman in film history. More odd casting: Bruno Kirby as a gay soldier and Nancy "Bart Simpson" Cartwright as Jennifer Jason Leigh's maid.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”
