Borstal --

It's been playing on all of the local NYC channels non-stop since last night. Hi-LAR-ious! He's just SO drunk and loud and belligerant and cursing out every cop in sight. A classic!

re: stayed too long at the party.

It stemmed from a January drunk driving arrest:

"NEW YORK - A judge ruled on Friday that a video of actor Rip Torn, shown staggering, bellowing and cursing at police after his drunk driving arrest last January, can be shown to jurors at his trial, which starts next week.

The 73-year-old Emmy-nominated actor took the ruling by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Robert Stolz in stride.

"I'm in good spirits. It's in the hands of the jury, the judge, the lawyers and the Almighty," Torn said.

The 45-minute police videotape, screened for the judge at a pretrial hearing on Thursday, shows Torn slurring his speech, cursing at police and at times, nodding off.

"You're an egregious bunch of ... artists," Torn says at one point in an expletive-laced outburst. "Go to hell, you guys. I'm telling you, you guys are all going to jail," he exclaims, knocking down a chair while refusing to take a sobriety test at the police precinct. "Take these cuffs off me."

Torn's lawyer, Adam Levy, argued that the entire tape should not be shown to jurors because the actor was denied access to a lawyer. But the judge said having a lawyer present for a sobriety test was "not an absolute right."

A police officer had testified that Torn's clothes "were disheveled, his hair messy (and) his eyes glossy and red" after the car which he was driving crashed into the back of a taxi in Greenwich Village on Jan. 13."

re: stayed too long at the party.

Hmm... How about some 80s musicians...
Not that I would want them to die, just that I think that their early demises would have given them more publicity posthumously had they died 15 years ago.

David Bowie
Billy Idol
Tiffany
Debbie Gibson
George Michael
Boy George
Richard Marx
Robert Palmer
Peter Gabriel
Paul Young
Jon Bon Jovi
Pat Benetar
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

re: stayed too long at the party.

Hmmmm....

This post seems to be going awry. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought "stayed too long at the party" meant they are still trying to prolong their original careers. George Michael and Boy George I can see, but the other 80s musicians, I don't think so. Also, didn't robbiej mention that they are now considered oddities? I don't think Ben Affleck or J-Lo are in the same league with the likes of Liza or Michael Jackson. They're really not "freakish", just disliked.

Hasn't stayed too long, but definitely needs a new agent: Kate Hudson

J-Lo is pretty much on par for Hollywood when it comes to financees. Loved Scarlett in Transalation and Pearl Earring. She's one of those actresses I always have low expectations for, but always surprises me, like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kirsten Dunst.

Bleh. Don't like Scarlett Johansson, but I can't say it's because she's stayed around too long.

Michael Jordan
Willie Mays
Rickey Henderson (though heaven knows he's still entertaining)

I just love when people are declared over or tired despite

--having $100 million grossing films

--multiplatinum albums

--sold out world tours

--Academy Award nominations/wins

--Grammy nominations/wins

etc.

Give me a break!

Right...in the past. When they aren't selling anymore and just look siller and sillier in their comeback attempts, we start to think they've stuck around too long.

re: stayed too long at the party.

Oh...well there are those people who you wish had never come to the party in the first place. Every moment they stay is a moment too long. :)

I agree Plum. Put Tory Spelling and Paris Hilton at the top of that list.

>> Streisand (everything since "What's Up Doc" has been a waste)

HOLD MY POODLE!

i would like to REMIND you that doc was only 1972-
BEFORE THE WAY WE WERE
BEFORE YENTL
BEFORE NUTS
BEFORE PRINCE OF TIDES
and the way we were studio album, the broadway album, back to broadway, funny lady soundtrack (sucky movie great album), guilty, concert at the forum, '94 concert, one voice, lazy afternoon, and just for the record. i will give you that "mirror has two faces" was less than steller, same with high ground, a love like ours, christmas memories, and the movie album kinda sucked with their bombastic david foster production values. but to say that nothing after what's up, doc? was any good is just sacreligious.

(am i forever going to be known on this board for my frequent flip-outs?)

re: stayed too long at the party.

Yawn to that list.

I re-iterate -- Streisand after "What's Up Doc?" after which point she became an egomaniacal, spontaneity-free, control freak, free of everything that made her a star in the first place. Her obsession with some misguided and wrongheaded notion of "perfection" has turned her into one of the safest and blandest actors and singers of the last couple of decades. She's BORING and BLAND, in a way she never was during her movies and concert specials from the 60s because she's rubbed away any aspect of herself that seemed real or human.

I had a conversation about this with two friends who are self-described Barbra-fanatics and each saw her in Funny Girl ON STAGE a half dozen times in '64 and the movie more times than can be counted and they agreed with me that the last 25 years have been an enormous waste of a great talent. They still support her in spite of it all, but can admit her self-possession and need to control every single aspect of every single thing that she does has destroyed what was many years ago was one of the most electrifying talents that ever existed.

re: stayed too long at the party.

Had Robert De Niro died a week after he wrapped on GoodFellas, he'd be remembered as one of the greats. Now he's the sad old mumbler who was in Analyze That.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.
