"Shaiman, Wittman, returning director Adam Shankman and a few others recently read Waters’ outline, and his die-hard fans will be glad to know that the outrageous filmmaker is once again proudly pushing the envelope. “I don’t know how mainstream it would go if he really stuck to his ideas; it would be a real John Waters-style film,” Shaiman explained.
As for the plot, he said: “People hate Tracy (Nikki Blonsky) because she doesn’t lose weight. They ask ‘Now that you’re famous, why won’t you lose weight?’. And Link (Efron) experiments with drugs. Throughout half the movie, he has an ongoing dialogue with three pimples on his forehead.”
“Edna (John Travolta) loses weight, but sees her husband (Christopher Walken) lusting after fat women,” Shaiman laughed, citing one of the musical numbers he’s particularly eager to write. “And so, she finally breaks down and runs over to a snack table. Just within one number, she gets fat again; gaining 20 pounds at a time. [Her fat] pops out, and by the end of the song she’s completely at her old weight again.”

That is the worst plot line i have ever heard of.
I agree. At first I thought maybe it was a joke and this was a cover story to conceal the REAL plot. I don't think that's the case at all.People hate Tracey because she won't lose weight? Gee, I thought the message in the first one was to be yourself and don't change to please anyone. Oh and Link experimenting with drugs? Yeah, the kids will just love that. Hey, here's an idea. Maybe have a successful movie come out that DOESN'T need a sequel.Leave it alone already!
This IS a joke, right?
There has been some speculation that this was a fake plot meant to create buzz about the film. Seems odd there is no major civil rights issue, unless obesity counts, involved in the sequel.
There's a difference between buzz, and loathing.

Why doesn't Marc Shaiman just weigh in?
Because he's creating 'buzz' and doesn't have time...
John Waters was on E news and he said pretty much the same thing MTV and AICN printed. Of course it could all be BS but why? I mean, why say anything at all? One of the articles say shooting begins in April. I wonder what the cast thinks about these details.
Does Travolta still not "believe in sequels" or did someone force him to watch Look Who's Talking Too and Look Who's Talking Now.

I think the plot sounds more like a sequel to the 1988 film not the 2007 musical.

John Waters has long been fascinated by fat people and the hatred they engender. It sounds like a perfectly plausible sequel to me.
I'd prefer Desperate Living as a movie musical.
Please , no John Travolta. He was the only bad thing about the first movie. He was dreadful (big surprise... not)
"Please , no John Travolta. He was the only bad thing about the first movie."
The ONLY bad thing about the movie? What about Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfiffer, and the extra 30 or so kids they added into the role call of Nicest Kids in Town?
The movie version of the musical was a watered-down sterile, Disneyfied version of a John Waters film. I love that they're putting the John Waters back into this banal film franchise.
