re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited'

I was waiting for someone to post this - leave it to the fearless Priest re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited'

I bet this will rankle a few people. I've never felt comfortable questioning someone's claim of bisexuality, because I certainly don't like my orientation questioned. It seems to me inevitable, with a continuum of sexuality, that there would have to be some who liked both. I've always felt it just basically meant they liked sex a LOT, and the choice of partner was secondary to that need.

I am STILL a perfect Kinsey 6!

I was thinking about posting this, but there's only so much controversey even I can take in one day.

In any case, I think this study is a bit over-simplistic. How do you account for fence-hoppers who consider themselves gay or straight, but willing to switch under the right circumstances? They probably won't be aroused by porn of the opposite orientation, but it doesn't change what their preferences are.

I'm ashamed to be an alumnus of a university that would support this study. There are some doofuses in Northwestern's Psych department who disavowal bisexuality (especially in men), but the arguably more intelligent and open-minded Gender Studies department accepts it.

I'm bisexual, but I'm more likely to be attracted to a certain type of woman. I wouldn't be surprised if this type wasn't even shown on the 'arousal test' images. I also know Gerulf... he's a nice guy, but works for one of the doofuses with questionable test methods.

Evelyn, be fair. You're assuming they set out on an evil mission to disavow bisexuality, but I didn't see anything in the article that indicated that. They weren't making sweeping proclamations, either- that was the headline writer- just questioning what some consider to be conventional wisdom. Science is supposed to be like that. And if their methodology is sound, it's an interesting result.

Unlike you, Plum, I don't have to rely on the article for my information. I actually went to the university and personally know the people questioned in this article.

Okay, but what are you accusing them of, then? Manipulation of results or just questionable methodology? Because as I said before, I found their methodology insufficient, as well.

Knowing what big trouble Bailey got in for his last study of transgendered people -- many of whom accused him of sleeping with them as a part of his "study" -- I don't think questionable methodology or manipulation of results is out of the question. re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Eek. I was just going to say that questionable methodology could just be a sign of insufficient thought, while manipulation of results is outright unscientific, but I think you just disproved that point.

re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited'

I actually think any study of sexuality (however heinous) is interesting, and I feel a mixture of annoyance and pride that this one is being conducted at my alma mater. It helps my case that so many other people from the left are immediately critical of what Bailey says. It's not clear whether his ideas will attain the legitimacy necessary for him to remembered like Kinsey. Many people at Northwestern hope they don't, and some say this in his 400+ person class on Human Sexuality...

To his credit, he's responsive.

I have to laugh at anyone who thinks bisexuality is a myth. There is SOOOOO much bisexuality all around us! And, I am not a Kinsey 6--I'm more a 5. There are definitely girls out there that could have me--that I would date.

Sexuality is sooo complex. And the ONLY people who question bisexuality are the Kinsey 1s and 6s who just don't "get it".

"Seated alone in a laboratory room, the men then watched a series of erotic movies, some involving only women, others involving only men."

As a friend of mine said, "Maybe it just means they like watching gay porn."

I know plenty of gay men who are more aroused by straight porn than gay erotica. All this study seems to show conclusively is that most bisexual men like gay porn.
