re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited'

Every gay who can't accept that bisexuality is valid is reasoning like a straight who can't accept that homosexuality is valid.

Where do you get off telling other people their feelings aren't valid?

I'm going home to watch Kinsey on PPV. I may have to think about revising my number...

Way to go, Justthefacts2! Gosh, I hate lables! Sexuality is too complicated and too simple for them. I often think, people aren't THINGS. They just do things.

I know what you mean... The article did say that they don't know enough to actually come into a real conclusion. But this quote:

"I'm not denying that bisexual behavior exists," said Dr. Bailey, "but I am saying that in men there's no hint that true bisexual arousal exists, and that for men arousal is orientation."

kind of disturbs me cause it reminds me of certain programs like LIA (http://www.loveinaction.org) which says,

"There is no such creation as a “gay” or “homosexual” person. There is only homosexual attraction and behavior."

Well, here's a crazy notion- even if attraction is a choice, who cares? You can choose to screw people of your gender, the opposite gender, or both, but it's your choice.

Amen! Religion is a choice and it's protected. So, nature or nurture--it's no one's bizness.

I am bothered by those comments, too amasis. Also in that it implies that arousel is not orientation for women. I know that biologically there are differences. I know stereotypically there are differences. But, I do not believe in the general notion that men and women are different.

re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited'

If a HUGE percentage of (especially young/teenage/early 20s) truly gay men did not claim to be "bisexual" because a) they aren't ready to accept their true orientation or b) they think it will be easier for others to accept than if they call themselves gay or c) they don't yet understand their "attraction" to women to be primarily romantic/asexual, it would be easier for gay men to accept/understand bisexuality. But the reality is that the majority of so-called "bi's" are not bisexual at all, but "on the way to gay," and that makes us skeptical of everyone who calls himself bisexual. I do appreciate hearing from, and want to understand, someone like jrb, who is mature enough to understand that yes, he is 80% gay but that 20% of him is attracted to women, and he has the (satisfying) sexual experiences with them to back it up, not just someone who thinks he could have sex with a woman, or uses the fact that he is capable of having sex with a woman as "proof" of his bisexuality. (Eslgr8--a 5.9, has spoken.) PS: Priest's new avatar is A+ with me.

re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited'

That's my point, though- why not just let people screw who they want to screw? Why not take them at their word about who they're attracted to instead of pressuring them to choose a label? I know that the movement to label orientations is at least partly an effort to counter homophobia by saying that homosexuality and bisexuality aren't choices, but in many ways I think it would be better if we said they were, and that's okay.

Makes a lot of sense to me, plum. re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited' I've heard from a lot of people who say they're just born that way, and some people (a minority, at least in my personal experience) who say attraction is a choice they made. Either way, it would be great if society could move on from trying to determine whether or not it's a choice, to just acknowledging that whichever the case may be, issues of gender shouldn't be a ground for hatred and discrimination, etc.

eslgr8, I understand what you're saying, but if it's true that some gay men identify themselves as bisexuals first when they're actually just "on the way to gay" as you put it, then why not let them go through that journey?

I do not believe in the general notion that men and women are different.

Yeah... I hate blanketed statements that claim to define how men and women are supposed to be, as well. They're way, way too simplistic.

re: 'Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited'

I think men and women are different. I also think that we don't really know what those differences are- we're way too rooted in old cultural notions of those differences. So the best policy is to assume no differences unless they directly involve anatomy. :)

"If there's a one thing I hate, it's a bisexual homosexual..."

The idea of sitting in a dark room, with some sort of ... equipment ... hooked up to your willie ... as they run videos of Tracy Lord and then Al Parker (I'm dating myself) to see who trips your trigger, just makes me laugh out loud. This sounds like something in a Mel Brooks movie. But no one asked me, clearly.

Neil Simon wrote, famously, in California Suite (Maggie Smith's voice required:) "...If there's one thing I hate, it's a bisexual homosexual..." Even if it's true, Bisexuality Happens. Get over it. People fall in love, people just fall IN. Ain't it great that it's an option, right, wrong, lies, truth, whatever? What's not to like about it? And in 2005, bisexuals are as maligned and demonized as those who embrace "the gay lifestyle." How about the human lifestyle -- meaning, you respect others, enjoy them, and learn how to give and receive love?

Plum you don't know how great it was to click on this thread and read these words. I've felt this way for years. As a man who has struggle with his sexuality since he was a teen I've found myself attracted to both sexes at different stages of my life. I am 35 years old now. I have long since come to the conclusion that I like both sexes. Some people have a HUGE problem with this but in the end this is not my problem. I know what I like. I don't like labels but if people choose to "label" me a bisexual then so be it. I just see myself as someone that's capable of loving another human being: regardless of sexual orientation.
