Struggling with my parents...it sucks!!

Ok first my subject line is not what it seems. lol..i just had to get your attention. Last night I got RENT and of course I was gonna go home and watch it (as most of you know I"m a 16 year old gay male still living at home...) well my mom had talked to one of her co-workers and was told that RENT was of Satan and that it was based around gays and lesbians and that she shouldn't let me watch it. Well my mom told my dad so when I brought the movie in last night they wouldn't let me watch it. They decided to have a family night and we watched the movie together. It was so f*ckin' weird, especially when Maureen and Joanne kissed or when Angel and Collins kissed. They both looked at me like "I can't believe you're like that". Of course in the movie it shows them, in detail, dieing with AIDS, and after the movie my dad decided to "talk". We were all sitting in the living room and it reminded me of those long talks where they try to talk me out of being gay. My dad was like "I'm so scared for you when you go off to college. I don't want you to come back years after you leave and have us take care of you cause you're dieing with AIDS." I told him (I was so proud of myself I actually stood up for me)that he was sterotyping gays..not all of them are dieing from AIDS and that some of the most successful ppl in the world are gay. It was so weird. Ok, so there is my venting for the day..have any of you had those discussions? My parents won't let it go...my dad was like "no matter what life you choose to live, we'll still love you" although it feels as though I am completely disconnected from my parents...no bond or relationship what-so-ever. Ok, thanx for listening to me...lol...I just needed to tell someone! It's really hard being an openly gay teen (that lives in a hick town in the south)

i'm so sorry to hear about how far in the past your parents live. it aggrevates me to think that people still believe you CHOSE to be gay. *sighs*

You sound like you have my grandparents like mine. Granted, we didn't watch RENT together, but we've had many discussions on why I should choose to be straight.

Without all the weird moments, did you atleast enjoy the movie?

Mine say they care about me, but when it really counts, they do not.

it sounds to me like your dad actually cares about you... you say you have it so hard but you have a family who, even though they dont agree or understand, will watch a movie like rent with you, and tell you that they love you no matter what, and they're afraid for your safty... how can anyone complain about that?

Captain_Obvious I did enjoy the movie...even around all the strange comments made, lol. AbbaRabbit I complain because that's not even all of it. That is only a small portion of the sh*t that happens. He says he cares but it rips him apart to come to realize the true fact: His son is gay. He wasn't concerned with my safety because if I did get AIDS there's no way in Hell i would come back home. They already told me that if I get together with someone I'm not welcome back in their house, and if I do come back for holidays or something I can't bring him because they're ashamed of it. They don't want hte family to know, although I don't really care. It wouldn't matter eihter way, because I have several relatives that are the same way.

I'm really sorry you're in this situation, chase. Since I'm not gay, I'm not going to try to give you any advice, but I do have one suggestion that might help you get better advice than i can give - change the title of this thread! (You can do it with the edit function.)

Most Rent fans are sick of the arguments and aren't going to look at a thread with that title, and the people here who don't care about Rent wouldn't look at it anyway.

Good luck with your parents. I hope they come to understand you better in the future.

Yep. I watched the movie last night with my parents and although I am straight, they now think I'm going to become gay.

Reminds me of an email I know is floating around talking about how gay marriage is wrong (where they prove the whole time that it really is right), where one of things is: "Hanging around gay people will make you gay, just like hanging around tall people makes you tall."

your parents should realize that loving you and trying to understand you have failed and simply beat you on a daily basis until you grow a set of balls, move out on your own and discover that life's unfair.

My stepdad said I could bring Ivan to holiday gatherings, but that's it. They just want us acting straight.

My other family said no, but I expected it. Life goes on.

I found it funny how when I took my mom to see Rent, she kept saying "Oy vey," whenever drugs, sex, etc. were mentioned, yet she and my dad ENCOURAGED me to see Animal House when I was 11.

Oh papa, play nice.

He is a young man going through a tough time with is family.

When he is older, maybe, he will have a bit more perspective.

Right now, he is looking for a bit of sympathy from those who may have gone through the same thing.

sometimes i thing some people think their families dont accept them or tell people they're not accepted beacuse that's what they want to happen.
you poor thing... you're parents love you. be happy about it.
and stop assuming you're the only person who has *ever* had to come out to their parents and not heard exactly what you wanted to hear.
