re: Swine Flu hits Long Island Public Schools...

I thought all schools are staying open now, treating it as the "regular" flu.

There are 2 children at an elementary school 1 mile from here that have it and the school never shut down. Several other students in this school district have the swine flu also and school hasn't closed.

Some schools shut down at the beginning of the swine flu "epidemic" but I haven't heard about schools closing for the last couple weeks.

Well 10 schools in the City shut down just this week... as far as on the Island I haven't heard of any either.

But this is getting closer and closer to where I live...

re: Swine Flu hits Long Island Public Schools...

It's still no worse than the regular flu. The death toll is no different than the people who die every year from "regular" flu.

This whole story continues to get blown out of proportion by the media. Much ado about nothing, I say.

Thanks for your prayers, PG2. We can always use more of those!

Yes, the swine flu seems to be creeping out to Long Island, but I'm on the Eastern Part of Suffolk County and the flu hasn't affected us out here--yet.

re: Swine Flu hits Long Island Public Schools...

One of my friends (in the DC area) had the flu a few months ago, but got better. About three weeks ago, he got a call from his doctor telling him that the flu he'd had was actually a case of the swine flu, which wasn't an issue yet at the time he'd had it. It kind of boggles my mind just a little bit that I'd been hanging out with a guy who actually had swine flu but that no other cases have been reported at my school.

I've had reports that an ass't principal in Queens came down the the swine flu (her son attends St. Francis Prep) but came to work ever day during mid-terms week. Various teachers reported her but their complaints were ignoed by the principal.

re: Swine Flu hits Long Island Public Schools...

My dad works with children doing educational evaluations and he found out from one of the parents that the NYC schools are pretty cautious about the whole thing and aren't taking it lightly. Specially after one of the vice principals in one of the schools in I think Queens died from it.

re: Swine Flu hits Long Island Public Schools...

I agree. Due to the fact that my dad is a doctor people that he works with, members of the family and clients of his are asking him if this is something to worry about. He said that if one were to catch it it would be no worse then the regular flu and that the media is making this seem much worse then it actually is.

Winston, may I suggest that you knock off the Purell and start shaking hands with everyone you meet. When you experience the symptoms of swine flu, then report back to us and let us know if the media is really exaggerating the problem.

People are dying from this illness. It's not to be taken lightly.

I am not saying it is something that needs to or should be taken lightly. What I am saying is that the media is blowing it out of proportion.
