BAT BOY : The Musical at NYCC Encores!
 Nov 6 2025, 12:27:25 AM

I have a soft spot for Bat Boy, but I was sadly disappointed with this production. The original show as written was campy start to finish. Act 2 in this production remained largely untouched, and that’s where you can see the hilarity in the writing. The new scenes, songs, and lyrics in act 1 only weighed down what is usually a romp. The traditional cast doubling is baked into the show, and without it, the ensemble loses all of the rich and funny characters they are meant t

This prompted me down an IBDB rabbit hole. Does WICKED still have 23 + conductor, same as when it opened? If so, that's the next-largest orchestra on Broadway, followed by a few shows in the 18-20 range (Aladdin, Lion King, DBH, Great Gatsby).

The Lion King also has 23 + conductor. A great resource for current Broadway orchestras is broadwaymusicians.com.

Well, yes, and that’s why the minority affected by it has been speaking out about it. This country and industry have a reputation of not supporting members of the Asian American community. There’s also the model minority myth where they think Asians won’t speak up about things out of fear. Since there are way too many examples of unfairness in theatre, it’s 2025 and AAPIs deserve to be heard how they are affected by decisions like this. Nine weeks may sound like a shor

Why a scholarship for Asian men specifically? Asian men are far less represented in musical theatre, especially in principal and leading man roles.

Thank you, Wayman. Always eloquently put.

Posting that statement at 1:00 AM on a Thursday may not have been the most savvy of them.

I thought this was a disappointing choice as well, especially since the casting notices emphasized that they were actively looking for actors who identified as Jewish. Obviously, you cannot ask someone their religion in an audition (nor can you ask someone their ethnicity), but just like when playing a role i

I’m personally still waiting for another Black person to win the Best Actress Oscar. The lack of a winner since Halle Berry does speak volumes when there were many opportunities to award somebody. So yes, winning industry awards does relate to visibility and opportunity.

Ensemble members, understudies, and replacements don’t win Tony Awards, which is why I mentioned it. Not every performer is suited in the ensemble or as a swing or understudy.

When Asian performers are still having firsts (Tony for Best Actor in a Musical) and seconds (first Tony for Best Actress in a Musical since Lea Salonga) in 2025 (and also the veteran Francis Jue finally getting his due), it’s quite obvious that it’s not an even playing field and that opportunities for Asian performers that aren’t ensemble, understudy, or replacement tracks are few and far between. The Asian theatre community was over the moon to celebrate a white-

It’s just really exhausting here, and the posters who think a certain way are never going to change their mind when people actually in the industry say things from their perspective and from personal experience. Most here don’t know what it’s actually like to be an Asian actor in musical theatre. There have been so many measured responses from people in the theatre community, but none of them heard, at least not here. The reaction from the Asian American

Just offering this in their own words:

Park: [Bringing it to America in 2020,] we were stubborn — we’re not changing the location, we’re not doing stunt casting, the actors should really match the characters. Luckily, the show was already running for multiple years in Korea and Japan and China, and everyone was respectful of what was already done, so we were able to stick to the authenticity of the material.

Aronson: At one point, we had Denée Benton playing Claire, Corey Cott as Oliver and Jon Jon Briones as both [Oliver’s former owner] James and the jazz singer. Then, our thinking was: They’re robots, so they could technically be any background, but if the audience only has a few moments to define the setting, it helps that the protagonists are cast Asian.

Darren Criss (actor, Oliver): Let’s call a spade a spade here — I’m the white-passing Asian of our group, but it is my identity. The AAPI community in the arts is a smaller, if not marginalized, group, so to be up there, I feel that excitement and encouragement from the community at large. It’s important, and I hope this show can continue to have that legacy and be an inspiring call to action in other artistic spheres.

Justin Scribner (production stage manager): I’m excited for Asian artists to see themselves in a piece that’s not about Asian trauma, of which there’s so much in the musical theater canon, like “Miss Saigon” and “The King and I.” That takes its toll. To have roles for Asian artists that just happen to be in Korea, built by Asian creatives in Asia — it all feels like a possible beginning of something.

So they changed their tune pretty quickly.

I did see the Signature production and it was so wonderful, especially after the disappointment of the John Doyle production, despite the obvious talent in it. Signature’s production utilized its thrust stage configuration and budget constraints for maximum effect with incredible design and great use of the versatile cast.

I would love to see a large-scale production featuring an all- or mostly-Asian team. Give this show the treatment it deserves! I’ve seen the video of the

Lady Gaga One Award Away From EGOT Status

I didn’t know we counted Sports Emmys in EGOT, although I admit I don’t pay attention to Sports Emmys. Once upon a time, people didn’t want to count Whoopi as an EGOT winner because her Emmy was a Daytime Emmy.

Lady Gaga has an Emmy for music direction, and no one has won a Tony for music direction since 1964. They really need to change that.

Probably because “Hitting the Road” is broken up into two separate tracks.

I can’t imagine thinking the songs of Maybe Happy Ending are boring, same-sounding, or non-hummable. It’s certainly not a bombastic score, but it’s not meant to be. I listened to the score on repeat when it came out, and it just felt like a cozy hug. Different folks, I guess.

From a craft point of view, Maybe Happy Ending is pretty flawless. I can see the appeal for all of the nominated scores (Dead Outlaw has the standalone/rock songs, Mincemeat has The Song of the Season, Death Becomes Her is the social media viral hit, Real Women Have Curves gets the biggest ovation of the season for its title song), so I think this is going to come down to voters’ personal preference.
