Seen it two million times but never cease to shed tears.
Can you honestly say you don't cry when Jack Nicholson is talking with the oldest son at the end?

I used to work as a medical assistant in an STD clinic. We would refer to any STD as GERMS OF ENDEARMENT.

Aurora Greenway herself would have liked that one! Too funny!!
Love your avatar jimmirae.
um, Glebby... have we met?
Me cry at a movie?
Silly boy...
(I can't get through that film without sobbing!)
Thanks, Yours is very nice too.
Thanks jimmirae.
I can't quite do that jump any more.
LOL - Addy.
I know you! :)
There's such a sweetness about that conversation with Jack N. and the older son.

Glebb, I love that movie. I was in Omaha at the time and Debra Winger dated our governor.
Shirley's anger at herself when her daughter passes is brilliant. Such a fine performance. Jeff Daniels is such a schmuck. Even Danny Davito is funny!
I love how the movie has the perfect poignant scene at just the right moment...

When she says goodbye to her boys and wants to make sure that they never doubt that she knew they loved her. They wouldn't carry a burden of wondering if they'd let her know how they felt.
I lose it at that point.

I love it when the girlfriend says something like, "There is not an emotion that you are feeling that I cannot validate."
When I was home for Christmas it came on. It was my first time home in 3 months and my mom was already upset that I was leaving again in three days. My mother and I were flipping through the channels and the scene where Emma is about to leave with Flap and the boys was on. As they were hugging and she said, "Mom, that was the first time I stopped hugging first!" I told my mom to change the channel fast. I knew the next minute was when they were going to pull away. My mom turned on some other movie, but then turned to look at me and was already craying. We both laughed.
and the score...

I'll never forget looking down the aisle on the airplane and seeing all the wet eyes to Steel Magnolias.

An astoundingly well-made movie, considering it's really just a soapy melodrama which, I must I admit, I adore own, own on dvd and watch several times a year and always sob like a baby.
One of Shirley MacLaine's finest performances, her Oscar win was well-deserved.
Aurora: Would you like to come in?
Garrett: I'd rather stick needles in my eyes.
...and then there's the scene when Shirley is screaming for someone to give her daughter the shot for pain. Hits WAY too close to home. I can't watch it.
For some reason the film disappoints when we find out about Debra's illness. Yes, the scenes are handled well but if feels like two different films.
I always thought that the film should have led to Aurora and Garrett getting married instead of Emma dying.
Let's hope Jerry Herman doesn't turn this into a musical. Calling it HELLO, AURORA! GOODBYE, EMMA! Starring Karen Morrow and Audra McDonald. :)
F. Flagg, Shirley M. and Sue Ann N. - all red heads.
I heard a recording of Shirley singing a song where she did scenes from The Turning Point and Terms of Endearment(Give my daughter that shot!) I think it was called, "That's what happens in the movies." Actually, I saw a drag queen perform it and it ROCKED. Does anyone know if this is from her one woman show? I absolutely loved the song.
Don't forget Carol B. who is from TX.
Sorry JG2, I saw that Broadway Show and sort of remember that section but not absolutely sure if it's on the recording.
I also saw the CD in Tower not too long ago. I should pick it up.
The thing is, I know she repeats, "That's what happens in the movies" several times. And I googled it and can't find anything about it.
