There is a February 2007 release date on DVD for this Oscar-winning classic.
Unfortunately, there is no commentary from Olivia de Havilland, who won an Oscar for her performance. I hope I am wrong. She is the only star left from this film and it would be great to hear her comment on the production and Mr. Wyler, Ralph Richardson, Montgomery Clift, and Bette Davis's fave,
Mi-i-i-iriam Hopkins.
Best moment: Ralph shakes his keys above Olivia.
As a bonus they should include the Carol Burnett spoof of the film: THE LADY HEIR.
You know, fflagg, that's a good idea, including the Burnett spoofs--too bad they can't do that on all the old classics--would love to see the TORCH SONG spoof again, MILDRED FIERCE, REBECCY, WENT WITH THE WIND....
It is a shame that the Carol Burnett DVDs were not handled better. I do not think they are releasing any more of them.
For example spoofs like FLORA [from Laura] and MILDRED FIERCE [from Mildred Pierce] are not on DVD.
Best life from MILDRED: "Kids. . . they sure keep you hoppin'!"
I couldn't agree with you more. I don't understand why they haven't at least released a "Family" dvd with all the Eunice sketches and also put the Eunice TV movie on it--they had such a ratings winner with the two reunion specials, I just don't get it--there's obviously a market for it.
It could be a question of rights as well as money and the 12-year-olds who run the studio.
Next year is also the 40th anniversary of the show's debut on CBS. There should be a coffee table book out on the show episode by episode and a TV special.
Who knows?
I don't need a brick to fall on my head. . .
Yay! Can't wait!!!!!
Got it and it's on right now!

Don't you just love the Aaron Copland score?
Yes, the score is brilliant. Copeland's only Oscar.
One of my favorite "Monty" performances too.

He was gorgeous. Still had his original face.
The winner of 4 Oscars.
Remade not too well as WASHINGTON SQUARE with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Maggie Smith, and Ben Chaplin.
Love the score. Love the entire film!
Tough choice between this and THE INNOCENTS as the best adaptation of a Henry James novel. These are great films.
Indeed. And I am sure Deborah Kerr could have been fab in THE HEIRESS.
I love this movie. I'm picking this up asap.
I thought WASHINGTON SQUARE was really pretty good...though I'm never sure what to make of Jennifer Jason Leigh.
I would have KILLED to see Cherry's revival of this one.
JJL is Parker Posey with no humor. :)
Cherry was fantastic as was the whole production. It is the sort of play and film where you wish there was a sequel.
This movie is one of my favorites; can't wait to buy it! Updated On: 2/20/07 at 05:25 PM
The DVD is out.
On the down side there are only a few extras: the trailer and a bland opening by Robert Osborne of TCM. I know that Olivia is around 90 but they could have spent the money to fly to Paris and hook her up so she could comment on the film. She is the only major person from the film alive.
And they could have included the Carol Burnett spoof, THE LADY HEIR as a bonus. :)
This is the next movie I have in my Netflix queue - I had no idea it was a new DVD release. I figured it was the type of movie that just should be available on DVD.
It was recommended by Netflix, but I'm glad to see it comes recommended by BWW as well.
It is amazing what films are NOT out on DVD.
THE HEIRESS was not out until a week or so ago. Another great Olivia film is THE SNAKE PIT which is out on DVD.
Did you know the classic THE AFRICAN QUEEN is not out on DVD?
I've got "My Cousin Rachel" on (home made) video.
That would be a good one for the DVD collection.
fflag, I couldn't agree more with your sentiment.
I'm continually pissed to see what IS released on DVD, loaded with extras, and still no "The Crowd" or 80% of the early thirties movies that are rotting away in storage while people flock to Target to purchases whole seasons of dumb ass television shows!
*end rant*
Well I am sure people will enjoy THE HEIRESS. Extras or not. But Olivia is 90+ and will not be around much longer. Would have been so nice to hear her talk about the film and its director and stars.
Another great film not out on DVD: THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER starring Alan Arkin.

I'm still waiting for The Pirate & Bachelor Mother to be released on DVD. I heard 2008 for the latter, I think.
Back to topic, I just watched this movie for the first time a week ago (inspired by the beginning of talk on the subject in my history of method acting in Hollywood class). It's really quite fabulous. And Monty, yes, does look particularly fine. :)
