Of course the critics and the audiences would miss the point with this movie because, apparently, the point is too subtle for those dim neanderthals. Mike Myers, a Canadian filmmaker, is incredibly smart and precise in his lampooning of the self-help sickness that has gripped our world. We are presented with a character named Guru Pitka, expertly played by Myers, who is a feel-good self-help guru much like the type beloved by talk shows. A "spritual advisor" who offers safe, secular advice that, when it boils down, has very little meaning. Myers illustrates this idiocy through the use of acronyms, rendering the mantra "Be Loving and Open With My Emotions" into B.L.O.W.M.E., perfectly encapsulating this movement.
And yet Myers illustrates that all of this is "safe". The film is mainly about the safety in pointless inertia. The penis and fart jokes were not meant to be penis and fart jokes but were meant to COMMENT on penis and fart jokes. Why? Because penis and fart jokes make people feel GOOD in a safe way. Films like MEET THE SPARTANS make millions while smart comedy like THE LOVE GURU and IGBY GOES DOWN fall by the wayside. Myers was exploring what it is about the human body that is so funny. Are we ashamed of our bodies, our "sacred temples" as they are called? Through that shame, why must we laugh?
I would really like to hear some other interpretations of this movie and what you guys thought of it.
