re: Teacher appreciation.

I can't place Montgomery Co off the top of my head. I am still learning the area up there. I go to Fairfax Co about 3 times a year and to Richmond about 3 times a year

CaGirl - right now we're in the middle of getting ready for the end-of-the-year open house - so I'm REALLY understanding the extra-curricular work load! And Robert is actually only going to teach one more year, as he's decided to pursue acting as a second 'later-in-life' calling. At least after all these years of teaching he's used to DRAMA re: Teacher appreciation.

And thanks for all the kind words everyone!

re: Teacher appreciation.

Thank you DGrant!
This is my 5th year teaching (I teach 5th grade) and I adore it. There are days that try my patience, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I did find it upsetting this year that being in charge of the school's social committee, I sent gifts for Secretary's Day, Administrator's Day, Boss's Day, Guidance Councelor's Week and School Nurse Week, and yet adminstration did NOTHING for the entire staff this year during Teacher Appreciation week which was at the beginning of May. Grrrrrrrrr.

Princeton and Blue: My hat is off to you both. I hope that one day I will be as good of a teacher as you two are. re: Teacher appreciation.

Princeton - that's just not right! But, somday I bet you're at the mall or restaurant or something, and a former student will come up and thank you for what you gave them. NOTHING will ever mean as much as that! re: Teacher appreciation.

Bluemoon - that made me laugh about your daughter! When I was in high school, and the 'big man in theatre', it happened to be during the director's daughter's years at the school. Made for some VERY interesting dynamics! Your daughter may have known best, in the end re: Teacher appreciation.

re: Teacher appreciation.

DGrant..
It's already happened. Last year (my 4th year teaching), I was handed a gift wrapped copy of the local paper. Inside was a section of essays written by middle school students. The first essay was entitled, "My Favorite Teacher Mr. __________" and it was about me. I've rarely been so touched in my life.

Princeton that is awesome! It is the best reward to know that you ahve touched someone's life like that.

DG - She really did know best and it was actually a relief for me, too. She's a terrific performer; a triple threat. But any role she would have gotten here - by her own merits - would have always been chalked up to nepotism. She faced a bit of that at her dad's school and handled it well, but not nearly as much as she would have here.

re: Teacher appreciation.

Isn't it that little heartfelt handwritten note from a student that means more than anything to us teachers? In a job that pays no bonuses, those notes are my bonus. I also teach fifth grade and agree that some days can be trying, but I wouldn't trade jobs with anyone. However, I am ready to look forward to retirement next year. Like Robert, I hope to move on to another job to do something new and interesting.

By the way, as a year-round teacher, May is one of the months I have off so I never enjoy the nice things our parents do for us. I stopped by school yesterday to drop off something and received my gift -- a coffee mug with one biscotti in it. Still, it's the thanks I get from my students and their families that tell me I'm doing a good job and they appreciate my efforts.

re: Teacher appreciation.

The sweetest thing that has happened to me yet was this little boy got a ring from one of those gumball machines and gave it to me and said that I was his favorite teacher ever (he was in kindergarten so he had a very limited range in the teacher department) and that I should be his friend and not get married. It was so adorable.

Kel - keep those lovely thoughts next to your heart - they'll buoy you when the only ring you want is one around their neck!

Some of my best friends from HS were my teachers. I think teachers are wonderful, and deserve all the money they make. I owe some of my teachers so much, for being like mothers and fathers to me.

re: Teacher appreciation.

Good teachers helped me become who I am. I'm terrible with names... I forget the names of people I worked with for years. But the names of the teachers that made a difference in my life are still there...

Mrs. Canel, Mrs. Bowers, Mrs. Ballentoni, Mrs. Coto, Mr. Leon, Mrs. Arguedas... (two of them)

In high school I was always in the teacher's lounge - they were the only people I could actually talk to.

YEAH ROBERT! WHOOO! LOVE YOU MAN!

Yesterday was one of my last classes with my first graders...I am SO proud of them. I sat down and watched them make their Hebrew letters out of M&Ms and write them and recognize almost the entire Hebrew Aleph-Bet, after not knowing anything in the beginning. I'm so proud!

And the parents are actually nice, and are telling me how "She told us ALL about passover, way more than I ever taught her".

re: Teacher appreciation.

I used to spend a lot of time in HS chatting with teachers rather than peers. Guess I knew something.

BUMP

I am a teacher and come from a family of teachers. This is a profession that usually doesn't get the respect that it deserves.
