In Miami-Dade, which is about 20 miles south of me, they have a lot of flooding and serious damage in some areas, but the Fort Lauderdale area was very lucky overall.

Dottie, it's crossing Florida and the Gulf of Mexico and could hit anywhere from the Florida panhandle to Texas, so the NE is safe. You might get some rain, but I doubt much.

Has Marquise posted this morning? I haven't seen him but maybe his power is out. Something like 700,000 homes were without power this morning.

They are reporting four deaths - and this was a 'minor' hurricane.

Everything is okay. No damage. Just that minor water issue. It stopped raining a little after midnight, so that was a good thing.
It's the calm after the storm now..

Hi from Downtown Miami (Brickell). We have power, but this was one bad storm. Our building, which is brand new, suffered major damage (the a/c cooling tower broke and spilled into the 6 elevators- water is pouring out onto each of the 42 floors). The fact that it snuck up on us and no one prepared made it much worse. If any regular posters live in Coconut Grove, Coral Gables or South Miami, they may not have power.

Just saw footage on TODAY and Coconut Grove (where I grew up) does not look good. She's on her way to Pensacola next (where my dad lives now).

My brother lives in Ft. Walton Beach and Mom lives in Gulfport, MS. They are both eyeing the storm nervously and packing up in they need to move inland. Ft Walton is still rebuilding after Ivan hit last year. I'd rather put up with my northeast winters and snowstorms instead. (remind me of this in January)

Greetings everyone,
We finally had power, cable and internet connection restored sometimes late last night. With the exception of a couple dented storm drains, a lot of unecessary pruning of trees and plants, and 2 million leaves and branches in my swimming pool, Katrina left us undamaged. We were very lucky (again).

Yay! I love that kind of story after a Hurricane.
Glad you're safe!

I still haven't heard from my mother who lives in Hollywood.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Apparently, katrina's Florida dance was really just a mild warm-up. If the forecasts prove true, God help the people in New Orleans. The storm surge alone will collapse their levee, and the city as we know it now will disappear.

N.O. is also already a good amount of feet below sea level. Watching the news tonight felt like watching a movie. It's crazy, and I hope everyone pulls through.

Well, I'm glad he got away with it.

My mother left her home in Gulfport, Mississippi around noon today, headed for my brother's home in Florida. (now, there's a twist - evacuating TO Florida!) Mom's house is only a block from the Gulf, so we are a bit nervous about the storm surge and the old coastal oak trees that surround the house. One of the trees is 300 years old and spreads out over half the house.

And what is SHE worried about? How soon they will be able to reopen the casinos.

BTW, papa, travel from the coast is going very slowly. Mom hasn't been over 30 mph anytime today. She is still not to my brother's house.

papa - unfortunately, our family member and her family have not been able to get out. They live slightly outside the city, but it's still below sea level.

The hubris of building in such a place in such a way, when this type of possibility always exists, may be about to ring a few death knells.

CNN just talked to an official in Louisiana who estimated that it would take 6-10 months for New Orleans to recover from this type of hurricane.

They're already reporting at least 55+ deaths. Very sad.

Bluemoon - how's your mom? Can't be good news from how you described her location but I'm wishing her the best.

Scary thought - just read a quote saying people are scared to get in the water cause of gators and snakes - YIKES!!
