Well, John Boy, I do understand why people vote for a "party." It's because some feel an allegiance to the ideals upon which their party of CHOICE was founded.
That's why I chose to register as Democrat. It's an ideological connection. But that doesn't mean I automatically vote for ANY Democrat running for office. There have been elections in which I voted, but when I got to certain offices, I could not, in good conscience, vote for the Democrat, so I did not. And if I like a candidate who happens to be other than Democrat, I will vote for him/her.
But I do support the Democratic Party and find nothing wrong with Andy Griffith doing so. He endorsed Bev Purdue in the primary, so he chose the person not the party, right?

Right!
You have to register a party where you live? We don't.
#28re: The 'Andy Griffith Show' love thread
Posted: 8/29/08 at 1:25amI guess I should say that not only don't we register party, we can't! We just register to vote.

As long as my thread's been "jacked," I'll play along.
I agree 100 percent with JohnBoy2. Parties are fickle. They change their minds, and they manipulate. The Republican Party used to be the "liberals." Those were the values and ideals upon which it was founded. Lincoln was a Republican. Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican.
And it was unfortunately Teddy that destroyed his own party. When he tried to get re-elected, after Taft made a mess (in his eyes) out of the presidency, and out of the Reublican Party with his bad, conservative decisions, he sought re-election. And he ended up dividing the Republican Party by starting his own "liberal" independent party (The Bull Moose Party). He ended up losing the election to democrat Wilson, but he came in second. And incumbent Republican president Taft came in third!
After the election, the Republican party never did get back together again. The liberals didn't want to go back, and most of them became Democrats. And so the conservatives who had stayed "loyal Republicans" took over the Republican party. That's why they're concervative to this day.
But they didn't used to be.
I don't vote "party" either. And I don't like being labeled. And I hate the "you're either for us or against us" mentality. It's bullying and borderline fascist. Dangerous, at any rate.

Now, about Aunt Bea...
Husk, I'm sorry they ruined the TV show for you at camp. One of the things I like so much about Andy Taylor is his tolerance of other people. All types. So many "colorful" people populated Mayberry over the years, and Andy was always accepting of them, and he taught Opie acceptance too.
If those are the real traditional family values, I'm all for them.
But they don't seem to be in our modern world, do they?

Posted: 8/29/08 at 12:58pmThe show jumped the shark when Don Knotts left. The episodes with Jack Burns as the new deputy are dreadful.
#32re: The 'Andy Griffith Show' love thread
Posted: 8/29/08 at 1:13pmAnd Knotts only left, because in the beginning, Griffith told him he was only doing the show for 5 years. So, Knotts only signed for 5 years. By the time he contract was up, he had won lots of Emmys (every year he was on), and Universal had offered him a large movie contract. He couldn't stay. I still liked the show, but it just wasn't as good, without him. Of course, the show was still extremely popular when Griffith finnaly called it quits. So much so, that they retooled it for Ken Berry, where it took the Number 1 position in the ratings.

I loved the show, too. As a native North Carolinian, it wasn't an option not to like it. And, I'm proud to say I received An Andy Griffith Acting Scholarship at UNC-Chapel Hill!
So I'm very fond of the show and of Mr. Griffith.

LOL. Yes, I'm sure that's just what good ol' Reg looks like.
And your that Arian schoolboy with the possessed, alien eyes.
And I'm Monty.
I actually think that's very cool, Reggie!
And I have to say, that I LIKE the color episodes of Andy Griffith, post-Don Knotts. Truth be told, Don grates on me from time to time. A little goes a long way, and it only worked because of Andy's calm "straight man" balance.
But when it worked, it REALLY worked.
That said, I HATED those episodes with Jack Burns. He was horribly grating, and you just wanted him dead.
But after he left (very quickly, thankfully), they started exploring some of the other characters of Mayberry and developing them. You got more Floyd (before he was too ill to return), and Howard Sprague and his mother (Mabel Albertson), and more Clara and Bea. And Goober. And Opie and his friends. And you still got Don, for a few episodes each season.
Those color episodes are some of my all-time favorites.

How disappointing this thread would have been if JohnBoy hadn't been unpleasant to me.
It would have been like a day with sunshine.

Oh, Reg, if an "overdressed to the party" quip is the worst of it here on BWW, you're getting off easy.
Be thankful! It's a real jungle in here.

Oh, it's no biggie, JB2. It was just that during my virtual-cocktail party intro to the board that PalJoey threw, you were sort of snarky. Kind of hurt my feelings, when everyone else was being so nice.
But someone pointed out that it was your way of flirting (a pulling-the-pigtails sort of thing), so I'm over it.

Reg, I didn't know you were from North Carolina! I am there frequently for work.
Besty, I'm sorry about the "threadjacking." It started innocently enough...I was talking about Andy!
And I guess both you and JohnBoy took offense to my calling Andy a "proud Democrat." I honestly meant nothing by it. I was just using a common expression to describe him because I was completely taken by surprise when Andy appeared on my hotel room TV saying Bev Purdue will make "a goooood governor!" I thought he was so cute!
Oh, and about JohnBoy...it's funny that you two (Reg and Besty) think he's being obnoxious because I was thinking that he seems to have mellowed lately!
No one has mentioned Arlene Golonka yet!!!
Xooo

Not sure whom you were speaking to, Miss Penny, I think "Proud Democrat" an appelation to be, well, proud of.
Whereabouts do you go in NC? It's a beautiful state, isn't it? Topographically, at least.
I never said JB2 was obnoxious; I'm sure he's a lovely person.
LOVED Arlene Golonka. But here's something I've thought for years: it seemed to me that as the series went on, Andy himself got less "fun." He seemed impatient with all the other characters. Maybe he felt the series had gone on too long. Or maybe he felt he'd been surrouned by too many cartoonish characters. Or maybe I'm reading it to it, but I did find later episodes less cheery, somehow.

I go all over NC. My fave part is definitely Western NC. Asheville is so anachronistic. I love it.
But I also spend time in Wilmington, Charlotte and Fayetteville. Where did you grow up? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
The "proud Democrat" thing took place last night. You'll have to read back to get the context. It was in the afterglow of the Democratic Convention and I was positively giddy!
Please, guys, forgive my use of the word "obnoxious." No one actually called JohnBoy that (not today...not in THIS thread anyway). I didn't mean to imply you had. It's just a word I use very generically to mean "annoying" or "snarky." I am usually more precise in my posts, referring more specifically to the posts in question. But I have been on a horrendous rail journey all day and have been posting with my Blackberry, which is not nearly as manageable as a "real" computer! Sorry!
And I think you wear "snooty" very well, Reg. In fact, it makes me want to charleston!
