Has this word, used to comment on a hot guy, been around a long time? I got to thinking about it last night after watching YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN when Madeline Kahn says "woof" after the monster unzips his pants.

I always thought of it as a way to describe an unattractive person, as if to say he looks like a dog.

I remember this expression being used in the 80s.

I hear my dog say it.

I've never heard it used by a person.

It's common in the bear community. It's more an exclmation than an adjective, though, unless you're saying something is "woofy."

Yes. That better describes the use of the word.

One ejaculates this barking sound when another's charisma summons an animalistic emotion from deep within the beholder.

edit: Pardon me. a WILD animalistic.

Apparently, it's complimentary when used about a guy, but not about a girl. A well-known example I can think of for the latter is in "Home Alone," when Macaulay Culkin's character is going through his older brother's stuff and finds a picture of his brother's girlfriend, prompting him to say, "Buzz! Your girlfriend - woof!"

I had the definitive Woof photo and it won't post. Damn you, Photobucket!!

As a brilliant stand up comic I know puts it: "The bear says 'woof.' Somebody's Mattel See 'n' Say is broken!"

When I used to hear it in the 80s it was said by straight men about attractive women. This was in San Diego. I asked my straight male roommate about it after hearing him use it. He said basically what Glebb said, albeit a little more crudely. Something like being taken over by the dog like impulse to sniff another dog's butt.

there are episodes of Blackadder (British tv show) with a character called Flashheart that uses the word "Woof." He uses it to basically call ladies really hot. here's a clip of an episode:

You must remember all the same that at the crux of every game is knowing when it's time to leave the table... And it's important to be artful in your exit. No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.
