I'm kind of pleasantly surprised at how not-as-terrible-as-they-could-be the 2015 Grammy nominations are. Don't get me wrong, ubiquity is still the key to getting nominated in the major categories. If we aren't sick of hearing your latest single, chances are you won't be nominated for any of the big ones. And, as per usual, it's the Alternative and Dance/Electronic categories that have the most interesting nominees.

Very very happy that This is All Yours by Alt-J got nominated for Alternative Album. I hope it wins, though St. Vincent probably will. Glad that they got a nomination no less.

Remind me what the difference between record of the year and song of the year are?
Either way, I hope All About That Bass loses.

Song of the Year is a songwriter's award - it's specifically for, well, songcraft. It is awarded to the songwriter(s), not the artist. Unless, of course, the artist is also one of the songwriters.

Record of the Year is, supposedly, more about the overall production of the track and is awarded to the artist, producer, engineer.

And, yes, nice to see Alt-J recognized. I don't know about St. Vincent. Were Alt-J to lose to anyone else in that category, I'd imagine it would be Arcade Fire. That being said, that kind of category's tricky, because a Grammy voter has to have chosen it as one of his/her specialty categories to vote for, so one has to assume s/he has an interest in alternative/indie music. So, sometimes very big names - in this case, Arcade Fire - can lose to lesser known artists. But, frankly, Alt-J have been having a very good year, so they're hardly a small name, either. I have to say, I'm surprised that Arcade Fire didn't get any of the big categories given that they've won album of the year in the past.

although, that year, a lot of ppl were asking "Who the hell is Arcade Fire?"

Of course, the Grammys feel that they have "done" Arcade Fire, so now they can just go back to the usual predictability. As for people not knowing who they were when they won, I guess it depends on what you think the awards are for. Shouldn't people be finding out about excellent albums from groups they might have never heard of at "artistic" awards like this?

I mean, Billboard gives out the popularity awards so there's no need for the Grammys to be so "success" based. It's weird that The New Pornographers or Broken Bells or Perfume Genius didn't get nods. And I saw this after sitting through the worst show I saw all year at a recent New Pornographers show.

When you say you don't know about St. Vincent, do you mean you haven't heard the album or you don't know if it should have been nominated?

It was utterly terrible. And I was so psyched for the show, even had to use vacation time at work to go. I left before the set was over because honestly, while technically proficient, they gave nothing of themselves and it was totally dull.

There was also a perception when "Reflektor" was released that it didn't live up to the promise of "The Suburbs." Whether that's because it was a double album when it arguably should have been a better single album, or whether that was a pushback against the promotional avant-garde weirdness they did with the giant head masks and that 30-minute music video primetime special... I just know I wasn't surprised they fell out of the General field this time around.

I personally would love to St. Vincent win that Grammy. It feels like her time is blooming after performing with Hervana at the R&RHOF and she's ready for a coronation.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Neither. I've heard the album. I'm actually not a big fan of St. Vincent, but I wasn't commenting on the quality of her music or about the worthiness of her nomination. Rather, I was just looking at the horse race. At first glance, I thought the award was likely Arcade Fire's to lose based upon name recognition/popularity alone.

BUT, I'm going to contradict myself here. Since a relatively small percentage of Grammy voters will actually get to vote in this category, it's probably a safe bet that they are interested in and knowledgeable about what the recording academy calls "alternative" music. Unlike the much larger pool of general Grammy voters, they've shown in the past that the ubiquity and popularity of an artist can have little to no bearing on their choice.

Take 2011 as an example. Arcade Fire's The Suburbs was nominated for both Best Album and Best Alternative Album. It was the only "alternative" album nominated for the big Best Album prize. Arcade Fire, of course, went on to win the big prize that year, but they actually lost the Best Alternative Album award to The Black Keys.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, it's probably anyone's game. As for who "should" win, my personal choice would be Alt-J.
