Congrats to all you Red Sox fans! I'm a New Yorker but any team that can come back from being behind 3-0 in a playoff series deserves to win. The Yanks blew it big time! The Red Sox made history! Good luck in the World Series!!!

Don't talk until you win the World Series, guys. And man will I laugh if the Sox lose at that level.

Hee. Well, even Yankees fans have to get used to losing once in a while. Good thing being a Nets fan gave me plenty of practice.

Thanks Curtain. re: The Boston Red Sox
Plum, I think it's okay to be excited about coming back and winning the series after being down 3 games. The AL pennant is still something to be proud of, especially after history was broken in attaining it.

It's good to be excited, of course. Just don't speak too loudly about broken curses, because the real "curse" (if you can call it that) is the fact that the Sox haven't won a World Series. That can remain true.

Woohoo! Great job boys! Way to go! Until Saturday...

BTW, did anyone happen to see Nelson (Pedro's little friend) on the Jimmy Kimmel show? I happened to be flipping by. He's a scrappy little guy! Someone tried to put a Yankees hat on him, and he swatted it away! Don't mess w/ Nelson!

I'm glad the Sox won the playoffs, but baseball is still boring. The Yankees spend 184 million dollars on salaries (Boston 127 million) which is 3 times or more than what most other teams can spend. It's time to put caps on team salaries (like football) and even the playing field. Maybve then baseball can become a game instead of a boring business.

For those interested here are the 2004 payrolls -
Team Total payroll
New York Yankees $ 184,193,950
Boston Red Sox $ 127,298,500
Anaheim Angels $ 100,534,667
New York Mets $ 96,660,970
Philadelphia Phillies $ 93,219,167
Los Angeles Dodgers $ 92,902,001
Chicago Cubs $ 90,560,000
Atlanta Braves $ 90,182,500
St. Louis Cardinals $ 83,228,333
San Francisco Giants $ 82,019,166
Seattle Mariners $ 81,515,834
Houston Astros $ 75,397,000
Arizona Diamondbacks $ 69,780,750
Colorado Rockies $ 65,445,167
Chicago White Sox $ 65,212,500
Oakland Athletics $ 59,425,667
San Diego Padres $ 55,384,833
Texas Rangers $ 55,050,417
Minnesota Twins $ 53,585,000
Baltimore Orioles $ 51,623,333
Toronto Blue Jays $ 50,017,000
Kansas City Royals $ 47,609,000
Detroit Tigers $ 46,832,000
Cincinnati Reds $ 46,615,250
Florida Marlins $ 42,143,042
Montreal Expos $ 41,197,500
Cleveland Indians $ 34,319,300
Pittsburgh Pirates $ 32,227,929

Plum, I believe the curse does refer to the World Series. The curse is not "broken" if and until they actually win that.

South Fl Marc- Please don't take this personally, but you've just pushed one of my buttons.

BULLSH*T.

Look at payrolls and wins in the past few years. Does payroll help you win? Heavens yes. Is it the only indicator? SH*T no. It's probably not even the best one. Otherwise teams like Oakland and Minnesota would always be cellar-dwellers instead of playoff contenders and top-payroll teams like the Mets and Orioles would have would more pennants in the past few years.

When I look at athletes' salaries from a moral point of view, I cringe. But they aren't being paid for what they accomplish in terms of helping people or something; they're being paid as revenue generators. Teachers and police officers, worthy as they are, don't generate millions in ticket and souvenir sales and media broadcast rights. And baseball is a profitable enterprise, whatever Bud Selig said to Congress.

And since I have to go to class, I'll make that my final point- Bud Selig is a big fat liar. And the business of baseball probably doesn't work the way you think it does. So if you'd care to know a little more of the truth, read the work of the late, great Doug Pappas.

It all comes down to tonight.

I think that the Red Sox would beat Houston in the World Series, but if St. Louis win tonight, I think the Sox are screwed.

It's not bull**** it levels the playing field.

The Yankees have won how many pennants in the last 10 years? No great accomplishment, considering the salary differences. Updated On: 10/21/04 at 12:33 PM

What a homecoming! I've been on the left coast, watching the games from hotel rooms and sports bars with other displaced Red Sox fans. Everywhere we went, people wished us luck and commended the Sox for having so much heart. The fever was everywhere.

I'm hoping for a Red Sox/Astros World Series only because I want to see Clemens pitch in Fenway again. That added dimension will make things incredibly electric around here.

I was really glad that the Sox took a big lead early. But I didn't relax until the final out. We don't take anything for granted in Red Sox Nation!

Anyone else remember when they were nicknamed the "Cardiac Kids"?

I'm so glad they won, especially after the Pedro fiasco in the 7th inning. I kind of liked the "Who's your daddy" chant from the Yankees fans. I still have it running in my head.

You forgot good old #8 Yaz! sigh Actually the nickname came from the '68 team I believe (could have been '67)

Yes bull****, Marc. Compare the NBA and MLB and you'll find that MLB has actually had more diverse champions than the NBA, for all its "fariness," in the same space of time. How did the Celtics and Lakers manage to have massive dynasties without overwhelmingly large payrolls? Oh, that's right. Talent, intelligence, and a healthy dose of luck.

Money helps a lot- I'd be an idiot to deny it. But a salary cap isn't going to make the league fair. Look at perennial losers and you'll usually find incompetent management is just as much to blame as any payroll restrictions. Look at the winners and you'll find a back office that's at least pretty smart, and often quite lucky. That's why, although they had a higher payroll than the Yanks not too long ago, the Orioles still didn't win the division. That's why the Mets' massive spending spree of a couple of years ago didn't work. They didn't spend smart. The Yankees (and Red Sox and Twins and Athletics) do. Not always, but more often than not. That's why they win.

Hey, Mom,

I didn't forget Yaz, it's just that he wasn't a "kid" anymore when the team had that nickname (at least I don't think so). I may be confusing my teams, but I thought the '67 team was called the "Impossible Dream" team featuring Yaz and Rico Petrocelli and Tony C, and the '75 team had the "Cardiac Kids," called that because of all the young players like Fred Lynn and Jim Rice. In fact, that year Fred Lynn won both the Rookie of the Year and the MVP awards. I may be wrong. It could be that the '67 team was called both the "Impossible Dream" team and the "Cardiac Kids."
