Tomorrow this film is being released at midnight. This is a do or die film for this series. Quotes from the New York Times, "At stake is the future of this once-promising movie property, and of course the lucre and luster it can deliver to the two companies most invested in it. If 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' does not succeed, it is unlikely that the remaining four books in the series will be produced."
"We are holding our breath to see how it goes next weekend,” said David Weil, who oversees Walden as chief executive of the Anschutz Film Group, owned by the investor Philip Anschutz.

I'm planning on seeing it with my brother and a firend on Friday night. Are any of you going to see it?
wow...I counted at least 4 review headlines that used the word "perfunctory" on rottentomatoes. (right now it has a 57% making it just shy of being "fresh")
I'll try and see it opening weekend. I didn't think Prince Caspian was bad, but I didn't think it was great either. It sounds like this film suffers from similar flaws. Hopefully it makes enough to warrant The Silver Chair being made.

I'm very excited about them finally releasing this film. I love the books, and I adored the first movie. I also think Ben Barnes is one of the brightest and gifted young British actors, but I must say I didn't love Prince Caspian. I admire him for skipping out of the Dawn Treader premiere early, so he could get to his show. However, I one f the main things that irritated me about Prince Caspian was Barnes' accent.

Ben Barnes will not be using his accent from the previous film in "VOTDT." He will be using a British accent.

Interesting. That didn't occur to me when I watched the trailer! Guess I wasn't the only one who thought it was a distraction.

Entertainment Weekly predicts that the film will open lower than "Prince Caspian." However, they think it will perform well for the rest of the holiday season.

However, when "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardorbe" opened it exceeded expectations. Box Office Analysits predicted it would open with $50 million, but it opened with $65.6 million.

Well, I just got back from the film and I did not like it. I thought the first half of the film dragged on and once again, like in "Prince Caspian," they added characters and scenes that were not needed in the film. I can see why critics didn't love it. One of the producers, Mark Johnson, wanted to make a great movie after the mistakes they made in "Prince Caspian" and they certainly did not.
What made the Lion such a great movie was the it followed the book, and Voyage has so much story in it, I am sad to hear that added things.

Ouch, it opened with an estimated $8.2 million on Friday! "Prince Caspain" had an opening day gross of $19 million back in 2008 and "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" also made $23 million on its opening day. I don't think "Silver Chair" is going to happen.

$24 million this weekend. It doesn't bode well for the series.
'Narnia' Fails To Tread Water
I was afraid this would happen. Dawn Treader is something of a lull in the series of books. If they do decide to continue, they will go through the same dilemma with The Horse and His Boy.

It still made $81 million overseas. So, maybe all is not lost for this franchise internationally.

Lion Witch Wardrobe stank like old meat left out in the sun. I can't believe they've made two more movies. The idea makes me want to crawl in a closet and die.
I loved the first two films. Mostly because the children were so perfectly cast. They were just as I imagined them. I had read the entire series three times by the time I was 10 years old.

They thought this franchise could be the next "Harry Potter" after "Lion, the Witch, and the Wardobe" made $291.7 million here in North America and had a worldwide total of $745 million. The film was TERRIFIC IMO. A perfect example of a film that stank like old meat left out in the sun was "The Spiderwick Chronicles."

The website Cinema Blend has four reasons why the film has not done so well:

"Cinema Bland"
Not sure if that's a typo or a comment, but it made me giggle.
Q, I thought Freudian slip on that typo.
I actually thought the film was poorly marketed. My sister loves the films and the books, had no interest in seeing this. The US marketing seemed to target the Bible Belt, being that it has its religious themes, and going out of their way to tell you Carrie Underwood provided music to the album. I am not even sure if Narnia had a niche audience but whoever did the marketing sure seemed to think so.

Between this and TANGLED, marketing sure has been making its presense known - and perhaps not for the better.

All may not be lost for this film series. It cost $140 million to make and it has so far made over $300 million worldwide. If I'm correct half of the money goes to the studio and the other half goes to movie theaters. So the studio has recouped its budget. An article at Box Office mojo is also saying that it will be 20th Century Fox's first film to make $100 million in the United States and Canada since "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel."

My partner and I saw the film and enjoyed it. It was precisely what we expected from the franchise and seemed right in step with the previous two films.

i really want to watch this movie again but none of the theaters in my area are showing it in 2D! argh
Is it just me or does anyone else think "Village of the Damned" when they see the subtitle?

The movie finally crossed the $100 million mark and became Fox's first film to make it pass this mark since "Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Squeakel." Fox's 389-day drought was the longest for any of the big six studios since Paramount went on a 16-month cold streak between "The Italian Job" (Sept. 1, 2003) and "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" (Jan. 8, 2005).
