The DGA Noms are out

Given the otherwise weak year, though, this is one year where a "lifetime achievement" Oscar win won't upset me. Scorsese is so overdue after the genius of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas...if he wins for less-than-stellar work simply because it's time, then I'm fine with it.

I don't think they should give it to Scorsese for directing the same film he's already directed 20 times.
And The Queen was a terrific little "TV Movie." But it was small in every sense of the word.
My money's on Condon. He rose to the daunting, difficult challenge and turned in a hugely successful, thrilling film.

Seems to me Best Picture is a split between DREAMGIRLS and THE QUEEN (this year's BROKEBACK--the most admired across the board), and the director a lock by Scorsese. I don't think Condon can pull ahead.
But SUNSHINE is simply not in the league with either Eastwood film, and not because it's a comedy. (It's not ANNIE HALL, MANHATTAN, or even MOONSTRUCK.) I enjoyed it, but personally didn't find it as fresh as everyone else; the Arkin stuff is far-fetched farce--tonally at odds for the reality of the rest--and ripped out of the first FAMILY VACATION movie. But it was a dreary year indeed if a nice if unremarkable film like SUNSHINE is even in the running.

I wouldn't be surprised to see PAN'S LABRYINTH take direction. It's winning across the board raves.
I still think UNITED 93 should win.

munk, I agree about Altman, but he has never WON an Oscar--just an honorary one...
As for Scorcese, I think he will win and it's okay that he wins for a lesser work. Is THE QUIET MAN better than THE SEARCHERS? Almost certainly not, but that's what Ford won for (amongst others)...we could go on all day....
My predix:
Scorcese
Frears
Condon
SUNSHINE Team
Pedro (yes, I'm taking a risk)

If Greengrass isn't nominated, something is wrong.
And if Sacha Baron Cohen is nominated for best actor, the Oscars have lost ALL credibility.

". . . the Oscars have lost ALL credibility."
Credibility as what?
