Wow.
I'm actually a little shocked. No Eastwood?
Don't the DGA nominees generally mirror the Academy Award nominees for Best Director (or at least 4 out of 5)?

WHOA...another big blow to Iwo Jima, which missed out on all three major guild nominations! It could've been a problem with a split between the two movies, but in that case he'll still run into that problem for the Oscars...
how bizarre...we actually may see no Eastwood this year.

DGA is more a predictor of Best Picture than Best Director.
In the last four years, they have been 100% alligned with the Best Picture nominees.
Though the winner of the DGA usually wins the Best Director Oscar (only 5 or so times it hasn't happened), usually the Best Director Oscar Nods and the DGA nods only share 3 or 4 of the same nominees....rarely 100% the same.
I'm shocked Eastwood is out.
The LMS DGA nod is a real surprise. It's a cute film, but not really a spectacular Directorial Acheivement.
I'm still shooting for Cuaron or del Toro to sneak in and grab an Oscar nod.
I'm betting that Eastwood, Cuaron or del Toro knocks out the LMS folks out of this list in the Oscar race.
You have to take into account that television directors vote for the DGA's, so films that are more "television-like" and less cinematic (like LMS and The Queen) have better chances with the DGA body than the AMPAS (strictly film).
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Only six times has the winner of the DGA not won the Oscar. I don't know any stats that compare who is nominated, though. I do remember that last year was spot on, and the two years before all matched except for one (Finding neverland at DGA was Vera Drake at Oscars, and Seabiscuit at DGA was City of God at Oscars).
It's hard to beat this list as far as a predictor, though.

Posted: 1/9/07 at 3:16pmI still have a hard time considering Condon a lock.

I don't anymore. he's created that rare breed that seems to spark Oscar gold: a decent film that is fluff...but fulfilling fluff.
#11re: The DGA Noms are out
Posted: 1/9/07 at 3:30pmI understand the hesitation to consider Condon a lock, but he hasn't seemed to have lost any steam, especially with this DGA nom.

As mentioned before, the DGA nominations mirror the BP nominees 80% of the time. I'm almost positive that this is our Oscar line-up.
I'm fine with this line-up, but I would have chosen:
Robert Altman, A Prairie Home Companion
Alfonso Cuaron, Children of Men
Guillermo Del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth
Paul Greengrass, United 93
Martin Scorsese, The Departed*

Gustof... I'm sorry, was that directed towards me, or the original post?
Truth be told, I wasn't crazy about Little Children. I thought that Winslet and Jackie Earle Haley were the best parts.

Posted: 1/9/07 at 5:20pmDoes it bother anyone else that is seems Scorsese will win for what I consider to be a minor achievement in direction? It was a fine film, for what it was, but nothing to earn all of this high praise. Or do you think it is just the year that they will finally give it to him regardless of the product?

very surprising list. I think scorsese is a lock to win this and the oscar now that eastwood has been bumped.
stephen s got two noms for erin brockovich and traffic in both the dgas (if I am correct) and the oscars, but in this heavier year of good direction, eastwood may indeed have split himself out of the running.
i'm stunned that lms got in. it was not THAT good of a film. I bet greengrass gets an oscar nom.

Sueleen, you are absolutely right.
It's blatantly clear to everyone that Martin is long overdue for an Oscar. Though I wouldn't necessarily say he has ever wrongfully lost an Oscar, his work is consistantly exceptional and solid. While THE DEPARTED is an engaging, well made, and superbly acted film, I don't feel that it amounts to much of anything at all. He has done some amazing work - and for him to win his long overdue Oscar for THE DEPARTED would make it seem like lesser of a big deal. THAT's why I don't want him to win the Oscar.
But Condon doesn't deserve it either. Truth be told, the most solid direction of the year seems to have come from Frears for THE QUEEN. Out of all these films with best picture buzz, THE QUEEN is the one that left me most satisfied in every sense of the word. Eastwood's work on FLAGS was admirable, but the film was a bore. His work on IWO JIMA is absolutely breathtaking - and Oscar worthy - but the only think against him is that he JUST won. Too bad Oscars are about politics, and too bad the Oscar is already being engraved for Scorcese.

munkustrap178,
I so agree with you. But my heart would be really full if this turned into a Dreamgirls sweep...
But the direction on "The Queen" is brilliant.
#22re: The DGA Noms are out
Posted: 1/10/07 at 2:11amI have not seen the Eastwood films yet, but I agree about The Queen. It seemed to have the tightest directorial hand of all the films I have seen this year and if I were a voting member I would choose it. As I said in another thread the last shot of Departed alone should keep the Oscar away from Scorsese for at least one more year. And the flaws in Dreamgirls do not make it worthy either.

The Oscar race this year just plain sucks. There's nothing wonderful.
If I were a voting member of the academy and I had to decide where the best direction came from this year, if would probably come between:
Robert Altman, A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION
Paul Greengrass, UNITED 93
Stephen Frears, THE QUEEN
Another Oscar for Altman won't do anybody any good (sorry, but true) - but I do feel that Greengrass deserves the Oscar this year. UNITED 93 could have turned into the most awkward, painful, tedious film of the year. The results were remarkable, though - and I think he had the toughest job out of everyone else. Give it to him!

I agree with munk, etc. about Scorsese...I mean, I liked The Departed a lot, but not because of the direction...the direction, cinematography, and editing were the worst parts of the movie.
But...they're going to award him for his career, not this movie.

Given the otherwise weak year, though, this is one year where a "lifetime achievement" Oscar win won't upset me. Scorsese is so overdue after the genius of Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas...if he wins for less-than-stellar work simply because it's time, then I'm fine with it.
