“The judge paused for a second, then looked directly into my lens and said, ‘To my critics, I say, ‘Vaffanculo,’ ” punctuating the comment by flicking his right hand out from under his chin, Smith said.
Scalia says it isn't obscene. What do the Italian-Americans on BroadwayWorld think?
That isnt obscene...but his rulings are!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't "vaffanculo" translate directly "go get f*cked up your a$s"?

thats pretty much the translation paljoey (im not italian in any way, but if you disect the word, you can find all the pieces of what you have the translation is).
so yeah, its rather obscene.
i'm not denying that all the parts are there, but my roma babe says that in general usage the english equivalent would be, "f*ck off."
Then the Distinguished Justice Scalia is lying when he says is it's NOT obscene.

right papa, thats the connotative use of vafanculo, but its literal translation is somewhere around "go get f*cked in the a**"
was he referring to the gesture or the phrase?

Would a nice Catholic nun be very happy to see gestures like that and hear language like that on the steps of a church?

A freelance photographer has been fired by the Archdiocese of Boston’s newspaper for releasing a picture of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia making a controversial gesture in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Sunday.
Peter Smith, who had freelanced for The Pilot newspaper for a decade, lost the job yesterday after the Herald ran his photo on its front page. Smith said he has no regrets about releasing it.
“I did the right thing. I did the ethical thing,” said Smith, 51, an assistant photojournalism professor at Boston University.

My late godfather (literal), the Sicilian-born Mafia boss used to use that gesture to show his affection -- right before he had you killed.
