The Emmys 2025

I had a couple of take-aways from this year's Emmys.

First, the opening comedy sketch could have played better had Nathanael Bargatze had a better handle on his timing, and ability to read a teleprompter.

I LOVED that sketch when it was on SNL with an American Revolution setting. Because I loved it so much, I remembered exactly how the structure of the jokes were going to play out in their new "history of TV" setting. Between Bargatze's poor prompter reading and my knowledge of the joke structure, I was able to "fill in the blanks" and complete the punchlines in my head before Bargatze was able to stumble up to the finish line.

If it had played better, I'm sure I would have tapped into my fondness for the writing, and would have really enjoyed seeing it in its new setting.

My other big take-away was the sad realization that Network/OTA television is not dead yet... but it's definitely got one foot in the grave (and at least one arm as well). Based on the number of nominations in each category, the only television shows worth watching on Network/OTA TV are: Talk Series, Game Shows, Variety Series/Specials, and Reality shows.

If you care about the more substantial categories of Comedy, Drama, Limited Series, Anthology, or Movie, the best of the best are only on streaming services now. The one exception that still stands strong on Network/OTA TV is Quinta Bronson's "Abbott Elementary". "What We Do in the Shadows" was also nominated this year, but sadly is no longer on the air. Kathy Bates gets an honorable mention for her nomination for actress in "Matlock", but that show received no other nominations.

The only other reason to hang onto Network/OTA TV is local/national and world news. I'm sure I will miss PBS greatly when they are eventually gone thanks to Trump's devaluation of intelligence.

All my favorites shows were winners this year, including "Adolescence", "Hacks", "The Studio" and "Shrinking". I LOVED Tramell Tillman's performance in "Severance", and Jean Smart is just incomparable.

My only disappointment is that "The Great British Baking Show" (Netflix) doesn't qualify for an Emmy within the streaming/Emmy structure.

I would love to have seen Uzo Aduba win for "The Residence". I thought she was brilliant in that and so upset they cancelled it after the first season.
