For those of you who want to give Honey Cone ("Want Ads") their props...Holla back...
"Want Ads" has got to be one of the greatest songs of the seventies...

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Okay...so they weren't as big as other groups...
Guess no one has heard of them...

At first I thought you had misspelled the cereal Honey Comb, which owns all kinds.

I remember Honey Cone well, Justice...

Extra, extra
Read all about it
Wanted
A young man single and free
Experience in love preferred
But will accept a young trainee
Ohhhh

Also, remember "Stick Up"?

Stick up, highway robbery
It's a felony
Heartbreak in the first degree

So what made you think of Honey Cone out of the blue? I'd hoped to download "Want Ads" and "Stick Up" from the iTunes store, but they're not on there. Here's a good web page with some info on this group: http://www.superseventies.com/sw_wantads.html.

Lipstick on his collar
Perfume on it, too
Tells me he's been lying
I tell you what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna put it in the want ads
This girl's in misery
Gonna put it in the want ads
Somebody rescue me

I find them to be an underated group.
Back when I was working as a Cocktail waiter at Barricuda, I saw them on an old episode of Soul Train, and fell in love with their classic 70's look, and the song. I have been a fan ever since.

Thank you Justice, for a treat of a thread devoted to this group. I so remember singing along to "Extra, Extra" when I was a gangly 14 year old gay boy.

"I'll set a tender trap...He'll be unaware
I'll wear a smile down tha aisle
'cause he's the father of my child!"

Along with "Smarty Pants" by First Choice, "Clean-Up Woman" by Betty Wright and "Band of Gold" by Freida Payne, these two songs by Honey Cone are among the most brilliant R&B songs on the cusp of disco, c. 1974-75-76. Good times, kiddies...Good times!

Wanted, young man single and free
Experience in love preferred,
But will accept a young trainee
Oh I'm gonna put it in the want ads,
I need a love that's true
Gonna put it in the want ads, my man and I are through

At home I find myself, lost and all alone
My man is playing the field, the thrill is gone
He stays out all night, says he's with the boys
But lipstick on his collar, perfume on it too
Tells me he's been lying, tell ya what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna put it in the want ads, this girl's in misery
Gonna put it in the want ads, somebody rescue me

I spend my nights alone, cryin' bitter tears
Although I cry aloud, nobody really hears
And when I need him most, he's never by my side
He's either playing cards, or drinking at the bar
He thinks that I'm a fool, I'm going to the evening news
Gonna put it in the want ads, I need somebody new
Gonna put it in the want ads, my man and I are through

Extra extra, read all about it,
Wanted, young man single and free
Experience in love preferred,
But will accept a young trainee
