Caution about food prepared by Mario Batali...
A number of years ago I was watching his cooking show one day and there was a close up on his hands as he prepared some food. His fingernails were dirty, no, filthy and truly disgusting.
One of the first things we were taught in culinary school was to clean one's hands and always clean the nails before you handled food.
Even if no one on the set had the sense to get him to clean his nails...he didn't? Ugh!

Ebonic, Emeril and Iron Chef are two shows that I just can't stand watching.

You don't like The Iron Chef, Matt_G? So you don't eat Octo**** on a regular basis?

Not on a regular basis. Only when I'm really stoned.

I like iron chef cause it's a good laugh, Matt. They're so serious it's funny.

Marianne Esposito knows Italian food preparation. Marianne had a program called, if I recall correctly, Cucina Italiana. She published a cookbook as well.
The books by Marcella Hazan, The Classic Italian Cookbook, and The Second Classic Italian Cookbook are two that should be in every kitchen.
Alas, she has no show.
Those and The Breakfast Book by Marion Cunningham
OK, also required, if you're serious are
Julia Child's Mastering The Art of French Cooking
and
The Joy of Cooking
Forget the shows....find a recipe and cook!
Preferrably with and for someone you love.

I'm also addicted to EVERYDAY ITALLIAN w/ Giada De Laurentiis. It's on now and I never miss this one.

I like everyday italian. And I'm really curious as to how the Calorie Commando dishes taste--he seems like he knows what he's doing and the people who are on his show all "claim it's the real thing" but if you have a camera on your face, what are you gonna say?

I'm with you Jose about Marcella H. She was on the Today show Friday; did you see it? She's written her final cookbook. She's the real deal.

I love Marcella! No, I didn't see her on TODAY.
I cooked my way through her first cookbook when I used to cook for some Northern Italian bankers down on Wall Street.
The Italians invented cooking, as we know it. Fresh ingredients, cooked purely and simply.
You have to try Gnocchi alla Romana. So simple a child could do it...so delicious and comforting you'll be licking the dish.

Just discovered this thread. Have you ever tried using any of Madeleine Kamman's cookbooks? I rank her up there with Marcella and Julia as a great cook and teacher.
And Elizabeth David belongs on any short list of essential food writers.

Since someone mentioned Paula in another thread, I thought I'd bring this back up
Love Paula, and Rachel Ray I want to adopt!
I met Giada recently, and she's even more gorgeous in person - which I NEVER would have thought possible.
One I haven't seen mentioned here whom we love is Ina Garten - who I swear knows every homo in the Hamptons. We love it when she has them over for bridge and cocktails in the afternoon!

Tyler Florence doesn't seem to be on the Food Network much these days. What happened to FOOD 911 and TYLER'S ULTIMATE?
We can never have too much Tyler in this house!

OMG! I love Mark Sommers in Unwrapped. I also like "The best of..." where they travel to different places. Did you guys ever watch 2 fat ladies? One of them died so they aren't on anymore but I wasn't too crazy about them. I dislike iron chef but I used to love two hot tamolees(sp) but alas, they haven't been on in years.
When I was like 10 years old, I met Emril Lagasee, I would post a picture but it's too embaressing. lol.

I love everything about the Food Network. I think I watch that network the most.
Except $40 Dollars A Day irritates me sometimes. Can all the food she eats be THAT outstanding?

I can't stand Rachel Ray. She's so damn perky it makes me want to kick something just to spite her.
I like Sara Moulton, though. And Iron Chef has high "it's late at night and I'll watch anything" entertainment value.
ETA- I just realized I posted the "Rachel Ray is too perky" thing when this thread first came around. Well, my opinion hasn't changed. :)
