The I Love Greek Food Thread

Is anyone else obsessed with this style of food? I take my non-existent hat off to this phyllo-dough wrapped cheese filled ecstasy.

Well, not obsessed with it, but it IS one of my favorite foods.

Are the phyllo things you described called burekas in Greek, or is that another language?

One of my favorite greek meals is mousaka.

When I was in Greece they told me never to order gyros, always order souvlaki. Apparently you just are never certain of what's in the gyro meat... sort'a like hot dogs.

There's just something about putting that white creamy sauce on sizzling meat that makes my mouth water.

Souvlaki is my favorite!! And my grandma's baklava, and my dad's lamb. I miss home, can you tell I am greek.

Back home, the local big Greek eatery offered the "Zeus Platter:" for $25.00 a tray of hummus, grape leaves, spanakopita, fried cheese, bakalava, calamari, olives, gyros and feta to feed an army. Bring your friends and enjoy!!

I am greek at heart. Loved living there, made wonderful friends, and if could live there again, I would in a heart beat.

re: The I Love Greek Food Thread

I'm part Greek a few generations back, but really, I'm mostly familiar with the food because a lot of Greek cuisine falls under the general gestalt of "Israeli" cuisine, along with stuff from Poland, the Balkans, Turkey, and Lebanon.

And now I really, really want some baklava. Mmmm.

re: The I Love Greek Food Thread

I don't care what's in the gyro--as long as it comes with yogurt sauce.

There's a Greek place by me that does a buffet on Sundays--it's basically the reason I was born.

DayDreamer if you live in New York City, I'd happily exchange places with you, for as long as you wish ! Not that I don't love my country a lot, but NYC is unique for me !!! re: The I Love Greek Food Thread
And a big kiss to all those with even a little Greek blood !
