I haven't seen the movie yet. It's interesting to me to read JerseyGirl's lesbian and Matt's gay perspectives of how the characters were portrayed.

I wonder if this is like a lesbian Brokeback, where the women will be fiercely divided on it, while everyone else pretty much liked it.
And I'm someone who hated Brokeback, so I'm not slamming any lesbian (or lesbian identified) woman who didn't care for The Kids Are All Right.
See, I hated both films. lol

I get the Julianne comments, but I really thought Annette was spot on. Might be a bit of a cliche', but I've met her - many, many times.
Bi-continental! I loathed Brokeback, which I think, is why I haven't raced to see Kids.
That could be the answer!

I did, too, Jon - and I didn't know that's who she was (didn't see ALICE.) Actually, I liked both the kids' performances.
I fell in love with the son in Little Manhattan. He's grown up SO much!
I first discovered Mia Wasikowska (the daughter) as the suicidal gymnast in the first season of In Treatment. I knew she was going to have some staying power, since she was the only therapy session I watched in the entire history of that show.
What didn't you like about the ending?
I thought it made a powerful statement about commitment and family and weathering the storms that are inevitable in long term relationships. This could have just as easily been the story of a straight couple. I thought it was pitch perfect in showing how the "other person" often disregards the importance of the partner/wife/husband...he freely made little digs at Nic. The male/female aspect was just a twist on an old story.
If Annette Bening doesn't win an Oscar for this, there's no justice in the world.
Since I just signed up for Netflix last week, I finally got to see this film. The movie did keep my interest and I thought the performances were really good (I've been a Benning fan for years). I did think some of the plot was predictable but I really wanted to see the film for the performances. I did enjoy reading the perspectives of some of the posters here.
Really enjoyed the movie. Benning and Moore are both excellent. Benning seems to be a lock for an Oscar nod, but I'm thinking this is the year of Natalie Portman.

This movie has just faded from my memory, I have to keep reminding myself that it exists and that I saw it.
Roscoe- Your review on the previous page sums up my feelings on this one to the t.
I think Mother and Child was a much better film. Benning's performance far outshines this one.
