Searched for a thread but didn't see one. I find myself feeling grateful to director Lisa Cholodenko for making a smart, funny and deeply moving grown up movie. A near-perfect slice of life film, the slice being lasagna, with as many layers and flavors and attendant mess that the analogy implies.

I'm glad to hear you liked it. I'm gonna try and see it this weekend.
It's on my "to watch" list. It has gotten pretty good reviews out here.

I actually prevented myself from reading anything about it before I saw it. And am glad. But I know, and I know YOU know YWIW?, those women!

Seeing it this weekend with a Q&A afterwards with Lisa. Greatly looking forward to it.

I would ask if they know if Hilary Swank has any movies coming out this year or is Annette free to win an Oscar?

HA! If I get a chance, I will
Annette's REALLY popular here - does a LOT of theater.
I'll just have to try and not reference the Purple Munchkin.

edit - further investigation shows that was in error (about all showings being 21+) - they just have slightly conflicting info on their various pages. Updated On: 7/17/10 at 01:10 PM
Hilary Swank is starring in Conviction, a movie about a working mother who puts herself through law school to free her wrongly convicted brother of murder charges after he has exhausted all of his public defender appeals. Unfortunately it's got Oscar buzz.
I can't wait to see The Kids Are All Right. I don't know much about the movie beyond the basic plot description. It's a subject that hits really close to home. It may be hard to watch.

I think you'll love it. I don't usually get hung up about not knowing spoilers, but for some reason I managed to avoid much detail about the movie before seeing it. The theater was sold out, which is just so perfect for something with as many laughs and as much heart as The Kids Are All Right.

I saw it this afternoon. Great performances all around and simply a damn enjoyable movie.
But didn't you say the same thing about GLITTER, Phyl?

It's actually a lot like Glitter but without the songs.
You know who I think might really like this movie? Auggie.
Since they're lesbians is it more like spoken word storytelling or poetry?

Namo, I think this movie has "Auggie" written all over it.

F*CK!!!
The theatre is about 1 1/4 hours away, which isn't an issue, that's what we're used to. I left very early, but still got stuck in traffic. I arrived 5 minutes late, but the rules of the theater state that once it's begun, there is no entry.
I begged, I pleaded, but to no avail.
As much as I like the rule when I'm sitting in the theater, I didn't like it this evening
I saw this movie today and liked it very much. Great story and the performances were outstanding.

I was almost sure that was a joke, but no, Conviction really does appear on Swank's IMDB bio. Wow. Could that description possibly sound any more like a parody of an Oscar-pandering film?
I can't wait to see CONVICTION. The trailer makes me cry which is always a good sign.
I said this in a thread before, but I really think Swank's career is strategically planned around Benning's. Anytime Benning stands a chance, in comes Swank.
To be fair, both films look great. "Conviction" seems a little cliche for an Oscar buzz film. And, of course, it's a true story (just like Swank's past two wins). But maybe this will be Benning's year! Finally!
Can't wait to see "The Kids Are Alright." Looks excellent. Glad you guys have enjoyed it so much!
