The King's Speech.

Has anybody seen this upcoming movie at a festival or pre-screening? The cast hits a lot of my buttons!

". . . about how Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist, was retained by the then Duke of York (later King George VI) to help him to overcome his stammer in the years before, during and after the Abdication crisis."

Colin Firth - King George VI
Helena Bonham Carter - Elizabeth
Geofrey Rush - Dr. Lionel Logue
Jennifer Ehle - Myrtle Logue
Guy Pearce - Edward VIII
Michael Gambon - King George V
Timothy Spall - Winston Churchill
Derek Jacobi - Archbishop of Canterbury

The King's Speech.

Wow - loving the press!

I generally pay attention to the industry, so having this pop up by surprise is a huge treat, and a sorely needed one. I can't wait to see it.

The King's Speech.

"TORONTO (Reuters) – 'The King's Speech' won the top award at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, giving the Tom Hooper-directed film some early momentum heading into Oscar awards season.

The film, which stars Colin Firth as Britain's reluctant King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as his speech therapist, captured the festival's People's Choice award.

Other films that won that prize -- 'American Beauty,' 'Crash,' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' -- later walked off with best picture Oscars."

The King's Speech.

I can not wait to see this film. I am three-quarters of the way through "The Reluctant King: The Life and Reign of George VI, 1895-1952" It's a bit of a hard read, but I'm loving it.
Great pictures, also.

The King's Speech.

Colin Firth is supposed to be brilliant in this (could he win the Oscar this year? I'm of the camp who thinks he was robbed last year). The movie is bound to get a Best Picture nomination. I can't wait to see it, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter are bound to be great and it sounds like a great story and a first rate cast. The Weinstein Co is behind this one so you know they'll give it their top treatment, I'm really excited.

The King's Speech.

I saw this last night, as it was given a free screening as the winner of the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival.

Such a simple idea (a man overcomes a speech impediment), yet so well executed. Colin Firth is so good as the earnest but frustrated would-be king, struggling under expectations and burdened with a stutter that makes him 'unsuitable' to assume the mantle of king. Helena Bonham Carter is delightful as his wife--the woman we would later know as the Queen Mother. And Geoffrey Rush, with great panache plays the unconventional Australian speech therapist who would both challenge and befriend the prince (and later king).

A film about a kings, yet one we can totally relate to. And such natural, wonderful humor. I've read Rush being mentioned as a possible supporting actor nominee (not undeservedly), although I would like to see Firth nominated for best actor for a second year in a row. A very enjoyable film.

canmark (and those who've seen it), do you think Helena Bonham Carter has a shot at Supporting Actress? It'd be cool if Firth and HBC won for playing George VI and Queen Elizabeth four years after Helen Mirren won for playing their daughter.

I don't believe for one moment that George VI had a stammer.

StageManager2, Helena Bonham Carter is absolutely delightful as Firth's wife. However, it's very much a supporting role and she doesn't have any really big dramatic moments that would make her a serious Supporting Actress contender, IMO.

That said, I've read some mentions of her name as a nominee possibility, but this is largely a two man show. I read somewhere that before it was written as a screenplay there was consideration of turning the story into a stage play. That could very well work. Some of those scenes with Firth and Rush would be great on stage--and the two perform like stage veterans playing off each other so well as they do.
