I fully expected this film to be the run-of-the-mill glossy historical Oscar-bait annual entry and I was pleasantly surprised to see something more focused than a weepy epic or gimmicky star vehicle. The coldness of the more contemporary approach to the cinematography lifted it a bit from the more conventional by-the-numbers narrative. I do think it will probably be Firth's year for the Oscar.
