The Laramie project

I've done The Laramie Project at my school on a small scale level. My director now wants to make it a large production after the success of the small scale show. I am very in favor of this considering the great message this show demonstrates.

What are people's views on this show and where have you seen it?

i hated it. my highschool did it and i thought it was awful. not only is it really depressing, but the way they did it was really unprofessional and just..bad...

I think that done well, this can be so powerful and really make a difference in a community. I like Laramie Project a lot especially for the fact that it highlights different views about Matthew/the crime/the blame/etc. I would say even if you make it a large production, keep it simple. Don't add people, or lots of costumes or lights. The acting and the text speak for themselves.

I was in a production of it last fall...I would say that we had a pretty talented cast but the production itself was not good. It was at a high school, so naturally they felt that they needed to include as many people as possible...cue the 27 person cast! Yikes.

Then I saw a BU production in the spring and was pretty impressed. The quick changes of characters onstage really showcase acting abilities, and that's great.

I agree that the show even if done large should remain simple. That's really how the show was designed. Hopefully the director feels as I do. The message of the play is just so powerful. I can't wait to do it.

re: The Laramie project

I was apart of it my junior year of highschool, and I have to say that is was one of the most amazing theatre experiences I've ever had. It was extrememly well done, and it was very emotional. I was stage manager, and watching the audience in tears every night was very moving. But I also saw another high school performance, shortly after ours, and it was horrible. If done well, it is amazing!

re: The Laramie project

My high school did a well-don production of it last year for our winter play. I was unable to audition, but I did see it and it was AMAZING.

I know members of the cast, and they said that it was the most valuable acting experience they've ever had. And, it really brought out the best in their abilities too (i.e. this one kid who figured out in May of his senior year that if you smirk while you deliver serious lines the audience doesn't take you seriously, even he- with some intense help from the director- was much more than decent in his roles).

I would definately agree with what citylights said, though- keep it simple.

It's a great and thought-provoking show. The college my mom teaches at is putting it on in the fall, and I'm definately planning to see it again. (I've seen them pull off everything from The Elephant Man to Sweeney Todd, so I doubt I'll be let down.)

Broadway Beauty- my high school is doing it right now too! We're the second (high) school (there's only 2) in our town in 2 years. The other one did it last year, BU this year as well as us. It's everywhere!
