re: The Magdalene Sisters

Absolutely - this is one of those movies that teaches not only about history, but, to be cliche, the power of the human spirit. However, just thinking about the movie disgusts me - it makes me think about how religion can be SO corrupted.

I have not seen this film yet but I thought you might like to know that Joni Mitchell does a very moving song about the Magdalene Laundrie on her TURBULENT INDIGO cd. You may want to check it out.
PEACE.

This is an incredible, moving, heartwrenching film. Geraldine McEwan is chilling.

re: The Magdalene Sisters

What a beautiful, and yet frightening movie. It really is worth watching, even with the depression you might feel. It truly moved me.

EXCELLENT! Turn the ringer on the phone off, fix yourself whatever you need to be right in front of you. You will be riveted for 2 hours.

Someone posted once (Matt_G?) that they couldn't sit through it all in one go. Sounds harrowing, so why do we watch?

re: The Magdalene Sisters

you should watch to understand what some women in Ireland were forced to subdue to for no reason -- I had a great aunt who was sent to the laundry and kept there for 11 years-- this film is a non-flinching look at a form of slavery that was taking place only 20 years ago....it should be seen....

re: The Magdalene Sisters

I agree this was a gut wrenching movie to watch especially as KMF says this continued to happen until very recently.

re: The Magdalene Sisters

It certainly isn't the most harrowing movie I've sat through, but it was VERY good. I highly recommend it.

The documentary that comes with the dvd is really powerful. To hear the real women this is based on tell their stories has stayed with me.

re: The Magdalene Sisters

MAGDALENE LAUNDRIES
By Joni Mitchell

I was an unmarried girl
I'd just turned twenty-seven
When they sent me to the sisters
For the way men looked at me
Branded as a jezebel
I knew I was not bound for Heaven
I'd be cast in shame
Into the Magdalene laundries

Most girls come here pregnant
Some by their own fathers
Bridget got that belly
By her parish priest
We're trying to get things white as snow
All of us woe-begotten-daughters
In the streaming stains
Of the Magdalene laundries

Prostitutes and destitutes
And temptresses like me--
Fallen women--
Sentenced into dreamless drudgery ...
Why do they call this heartless place
Our Lady of Charity?
Oh charity!

These bloodless brides of Jesus
If they had just once glimpsed their groom
Then they'd know, and they'd drop the stones
Concealed behind their rosaries
They wilt the grass they walk upon
They leech the light out of a room
They'd like to drive us down the drain
At the Magdalene laundries

Peg O'Connell died today
She was a cheeky girl
A flirt
They just stuffed her in a hole!
Surely to God you'd think at least some bells should ring!
One day I'm going to die here too
And they'll plant me in the dirt
Like some lame bulb
That never blooms come any spring
Not any spring
No, not any spring
Not any spring

PEACE.

re: The Magdalene Sisters

Wow, I just rented this movie this weekend and it is so powerful. All of the performances are remarkable. I do agree that the documentary is just as moving but I would suggest watching the film first and then the documentary as a lot of what is discussed in the doc happens in the film and my spoil it some.

Now, that said, did anyone else think the film was a strange combination of TROUBLE WITH ANGELS and CAGED with just a bit of ANNIE thrown in?

PEACE.
