Posted: 6/22/04 at 2:21amI love Barbra too. My biggest thrill was the day I went to the theater and her and James Brolin were seated in our section. I think that and Liza are the only star sitghtings that got me all excited.

Posted: 6/22/04 at 8:51amI love her first three albums and feel like it was all down hill after that. When she was young, she took risks that were very exciting in her singing and it was thrilling to hear her perform. Now she is just a parody of her former self. I love What's Up Doc..one of my favorite fun films, and I love Funny Girl - but I wouldn't pay to see her perform now.

Posted: 6/22/04 at 8:53amEven Barbra parodying Barbra is stellar singing. The woman is talented. Acting, Directing, Producing, and, of course, THAT VOICE!

Posted: 6/22/04 at 12:26pmI love Yentl and Funny Girl. I just watched Funny Girl for the first time last evening, and all I can say is wow. And to think that Carol Channing went on record saying that Barbra wasn't funny.

(I was going to mention how much I loathe 'Funny Lady', but since this is a Barbra appreciation thread, I'll refrain from doing so
)

Posted: 6/22/04 at 3:26pmI can't imagine why anyone would loathe anything about her - she has her good years and bad years, just like anyone else, and NO ONE can be expected to be perfect 100% of the time. AS I said before - her early work is still her best - get those first three albums and see if you don't agree with me...

Posted: 6/22/04 at 3:51pmwell, Funny Lady is definitely not her best work either - but there are some great songs in it.

Exactly.
I loved the storyline, though the plot was slow.
"How Lucky Can You Get" is GREAT!

I liked Funny Lady. I mean, it's not the greatest film ever made, but Funny Girl did leave some strings untied and I liked seeing where Fanny Brice had gone to after the first film.
I think another great film of Barbra's that is underappreciated is Nuts. I though she was fantastick in that movie. I just bought the DVD so I was excited to hear her commentary on that. :) and I LOVE that she wrote the entire score for that movie (as short as it may be). lol
I have all of Barbra' CDs, every movie on tape (yes, including All Night Long) lol Some I have recently bought on DVD.
I do have most of her taped specials...I think the only ones I'm missing are The Belle of 14th Street and Barbra Streisand: And Other Musical Instruments. They're all on VHS of course, but hopefully (well according to Barbranews.com) they will be reeased on DVD.
I am really looking forward to "Meet the Fockers." :) She is a great comedic actress, but we really haven't seen that since the 70's.
Also, don't forget to watch that special tonight on CBS at 8pm: AFI's 100 years 100 songs. I'm sure Barbra will be featured.

The greatest, most talented entertainer ever. Garland is the runner-up (only because her ambitions didn't extend to directing, songwriting, producing, etc.)

lol I just finished watching Barbra's remake of A Star is Born, and I love how in the credits it says, "Ms. Streisand's Clothes...From Her Closet."
It's funny because Judy's and Barbra's versions of that movie are so completely different, and I appreciate them both for such different reasons. It's nice when a remake is really a remake and not just a similar knockoff from the first (or in Judy's case the second, since her's was not even the original version).

Posted: 6/23/04 at 7:55amI agree that "Funny Lady" had great songs - both the authentic ones from the 30's and the Kander & Ebb originals - but the story and characters were pretty weak.

I celebrated the Millenium with Barbra at one of her (farewell?) concerts at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It truly was a night to remember. Barbra's gift to each member of the audience was a multicolored flashlight with tentacle-like lights at the end (mine still works fine)which was supposed to be used to celebrate at midnight. Everyone got the idea to use them much earlier (much to Barbra's delight) when she surprised the audience by singing her disco classic "Fight" ( the theme from "The Main Event"). The entire concert was tremendous fun - a true "event". I think this show was preserved as her "Timeless" CD and DVD.
Unfortunately, I broke my arm the next day (New Years Day!) at Hoover Dam, but I was still able to protect and carry a commemorative bottle of Barbra champagne on cross country flights from Las Vegas to Portland, Oregon and then to my home in Atlanta.
