I saw this sad article yesterday (see link) and my heart just sunk. He has given so much. As an entertainer and as a charitable man.

I hope that however much time he has left is peaceful, filled with love, and painless.

In addition to all those great shots of Paul when he was younger, he continued to do great work up to as renently as 2005 (with Empire Falls).

Alledgedly he was up for the title role in Ben Hur but refused it saying "never again will I wear a cocktail dress in a movie". He was alluding to his role in The Silver Chalice.

The Scott Newman Center - a response to the devastating loss of his son to drug addiction.

And that's another thing - he set up the center because he realized all he had not been able to do and see concerning his son, because of his own issues. So it was done out of a desire to educate and help others so they wouldn't make the same mistakes.

And that always seemed to be a theme in his life. Recognition of the things that weren't working, followed by a sincere attempt to learn, grow and live differently.

As I said initially, my ideal of the perfect man.

He and Joanne were sitting a few rows behind us at THE APPLE TREE a couple of years ago. They were with some of their grandchildren. I noticed them, but didn't want to bother them since they were clearly on a family outing.

Little by little, people started to notice them and approach them. Mr. Newman was as gracious and friendly as you would imagine. He never acted as though he were "bothered" by any of it. A class act. (Joanne too.)

The Verdict and Absence of Malice are two of the best movies- nothing flashy, no special effects, just a great script executed well with wonderful actors giving their all. I am sorry to hear he is not doing well.

What an amazing actor, philanthropist, humanitarian, husband, etc. He is one of the classiest men to ever grace the screen and he will be sooo missed. I love all his movies but my all time favorite is "The Long, Hot Summer"....
